The oldest German classic race is the "Rund um Berlin", in its 94th
edition this year. It is 188 kilometres, (ranked 1.5) and held around
Berlin's central metropolitan area. This year, Steffen Radochla (Bunte
Berte-Leipzig) managed to win the classic ahead of Rene Obst and Andreas
Beikirch, however many of the riders in the race had to be stopped due
to insufficient traffic control. Only nine of the 138 starts actually
finished.
After the start in Berlin's Potsdamer Platz, the field largely held
together as they exited the city on a big lap. The final nine man break
formed in the streets of Berlin and had a one minute lead over the peloton
who were keen to fight out 10th place. However it was not to be after
the police and the barriers preventing traffic from entering the course
failed, and the bunch could not continue. All remaining riders were
awarded 10th place.
