Rubiera finishes on top with Kelme

Kelme's Jose Luis Rubiera won his last race with the team, the Subida al Naranco contested over a 156 kilometre parcours. Rubiera will join US Postal next season, but gave Kelme a win after he beat ONCE's Carlos Sastre and Festina's Fabian Jeker by 24 seconds.

The race was also one of the last tests before the World Championships in Plouay next week. However, riders such as Angel Casero, Joseba Beloki and Fernando Escartin all abandoned. After just 5 kilometres, a group of 20 escaped, but only two of these remained after 40 kilometres. Santiago Perez (Spanish U23) and Eladio Jimenez (Banesto) carried on until 30 kilometres to go, winning the third category El Pedroso, La Madera and La Gargantada climbs.

Frenchman Laurent Jalabert bridged up to them, and the trio maintained their advantage until 10 kilometres to go but they were caught on the second category La Manzaneda climb. Then it was the turn of Jeker and Rubiera who attacked in Oviedo, just before the final climb of Naranco. Rubiera launched his final move with two kilometres to go, dropping the Swiss who was caught before the line by Sastre.
