94th Paris Tours - CDMFrance, October 8, 20001999 Results Preview Start List Chronology Past Winners PreviewThe penultimate round of the World Cup is Paris-Tours, in its 105th year and 94th edition in 2000, making it one of the oldest cycling classics. Paris-Tours is traditionally a sprinter's race, but occasionally a break succeeds as it did last year, with Belgian Marc Wauters taking the win after attacking with Gianni Faresin with 50 kilometres to go. In 1998, Jacky Durand broke a long French drought in the event with a lone breakaway with 30 kilometres to go, and in 1997, Andrei Tchmil won ahead of Max Sciandri after the pair escaped with 4 kilometres to go. The race starts in Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines, finishing in the avenue de Grammont (Tours), after 254 kilometres. Along the way, it makes a long pass through the Beauce before entering the more narrow and winding roads of the Val-de-Loire. Usually, northeasterly tailwinds favour the riders, hence the high average speeds recorded over the past few years. The fastest race was in 1997 when Andrei Tchmil won in 5.23.44 (48.4 km/h). There are 24 teams enrolled this year, including 19 first division and 5 from the second division. Bonjour, Credit Agricole, Euskaltel-Euskadi, Big Mat Auber 93 and Alexia-Aluminio are those from the latter. Last year's winner, Marc Wauters (Rabobank) will wear number one, however his successes this year have been few. Rabobank have Leon Van Bon and Markus Zberg, along with Maarten Den Bakker and Rolf Sorenson as their main hopes for this race. Oscar Freire leads the Mapei lineup, after pulling out early from the Giro della Provincia della Lucca. Mapei have Paolo Bettini as a strong chance to manage a breakaway win as well. Telekom will of course be looking to defend Erik Zabel, and really need to keep things together in order for him to place in a bunch sprint. The Telekom Olympians, Ullrich, Kloden, Vinokourov and Aldag will provide more than ample support. Fassa Bortolo have the experienced Fabio Baldato and Dimitri Konyshev, as well as the Giro di Luca winner, Alessandro Petacchi. Lampre-Daikin's speedsters, Robert Hunter, Zbigniew Spruch and Mariano Piccoli will head their charge, although Oscar Camenzind and Gabriele Missaglia are not to be overlooked. Vini Caldirola will probably be looking to set up Romans Vainsteins, while Festina, headed by Christophe Moreau also have a chance with David Clinger. Peter Van Petegem, Serguei Ivanov and Jans Koerts will lead the charge for Farm Frites, as will Jo Planckaert (Cofidis) and Biagio Conte (Saeco). Lotto will be aiming to put Andrei Tchmil in a winning position, as he is second overall in the World Cup standings at the moment. Francaise des Jeux have several in-form riders, including Frank Hoj, Fabrizio Guidi and Frédéric Guesdon. Ag2r's Jaan Kirsipuu has had success in this race, and rode quite well in the Olympic Games. Credit Agricole's Stuart O'Grady and Jens Voigt are their two biggest hopes, although Thor Hushovd can not be ruled out. Jean Delatour riders Laurent Brochard and Patrice Halgand recently took first and second in the Coupe de France, and they have been in good form all year. Big Mat have chances with Christophe Capelle and Jay Sweet, should the race come down to a bunch sprint. In terms of the World Cup standings, there are still nine riders who can theoretically win, although there is one clear favourite. After winning Milan-San Remo and the Amstel Gold Race, Erik Zabel now has a 126 point lead over 1999 overall winner, Andre Tchmil, with Romans Vainsteins not far behind. To bridge that gap will require two strong performances in Paris-Tours and the Tour of Lombardy by Tchmil, Vainsteins or any of the others. Given the similarity of the top three, it seems as though Zabel will have to have two very bad days for the others to pull off an upset win. Francis Pelissier, escaped on Chinon hill, to beat Christophe and Mottiat, in the slowest average speed - just under 23 km/h. 1922 Next year, Henri Pelissier brother of Francis narrowly beats Suter. This was the closest victory. 1935 Rene Le Greves wins the race in the fastest race to date. He is among four sprinters who dominated the times - Le Greves, Roger Lapebie and Di Paco. 1936 The speeds are rising and with an average of 41 km/h, Danneels sprints to victory. 1948 It is now up to an average of 43 km/h, as Louis Caput beats Mignat and Idee in the sprint. The three had staged a long breakaway. 1950 Andre Mahe solos to victory after breaking away in the last 10 kms. The pack just about chases him down. The big development was the new front ring and back ring he rode with - 52 x 14. 1956 At the 44 kms to the finish mark, Albert Bouvet attacks at Poce-sur-Cisse and keeps a narrow margin (never more than 50 seconds), and triumphs on top of l'Alouette hill. Notable feature - no Frenchman has won the race since. 1961 Belgium's Joseph Wouters sprints to win from a group who had staged a successful breakway. Notable feature - he was under 20 years of age. 1962 Joop De Roo wins with a record average of 44.9 km/h 1965 Fixed gear bikes only. The organisers said it was to make the race tougher. A strong tail wind thwarts them and the Dutchman Karstens (23) takes the new record with an avs of 45 km/h. 1992 Another strong tail wind, Belgium's Henrik Redant rides in with 46.7 km/h ave, and a new record. 1997 Andre Tchmil sets the new record 48.4 km/h. 1998 Jacky Durand breaks a 42-year drought and wins it for France.
