Earl Shines

Henry Earl (USA), 1999 World Champion, took the 500 meters track TT in the 55-59 age category recording 38.276 sec. Stanley Singh and Frederick Prirop (both USA) took 2nd and 3rd with 41.938 and 46.986 secs respectively. The event was held at Habana's National Velodrome Reynaldo Paseiro.

In the same event but in the 50-54 category, three Cubans took the top honors: Leonardo Hernández, Aldo Arencibia and Enrique Cordero.

In the Women's 500 track TT, Mexican María I. León took the gold in the 35-39 age category. Betis Linell (40-44) and Tracy Lea (45-49) both from the USA, took the gold. Mexican World Guinnes record holder Carmen Alicia Muñiz, took the top place in the 50+ category.

Patrick Gellinaeu (USA), winner of several gold medals last year, once again took the 750 track TT in the 45-49 age category acing the field at 1:01:298. Behind him was Cuban Jorge Gómez (1:09:339), and Costa Rican Mario Barantes (1:12:679).

In the Women's 750 m. USA riders Lea and Hadlock took first and second. Cuban journalist Lissette Ricardo, with no previous training and riding on a borrowed bike, took the third spot in her 45-49 age category.

Four finals are on today's schedule in the men's Olympic Sprint event, points races for both men and women, in various age categories.

Raul "The Locomotive" Vazquez, a Cuban favorite, took the 2000m Individual Pursuit in the 50-54 category. Hector Campos, Costa Rican, took second, while Leonardo Hernandez, another Cuban took third.

In the 55-59 category Arthur Berger (USA) took the gold; Eduardo Silva (Colombia), silver; James Cushing-Murray (USA), bronze. In the 60+ Richard Simons took top honors, and Ferdinand Scharf, second. Both riders are from the USA.

In the 30-34 points race, the Cubans dominated. Tomas Prado, Juan C. Bosmelian, and Danilo Armand took the top honors in that order.

In the 40-44 points race, Ronald Hinson (USA), Bernardo Figueroa (COL), and Gerardo Martinez (USA), took the top three spots.

In the 45-49 Patrick Gellineau (USA), Jorge Gomez (CUB), and Mario Barrantes (CRC) took the first three places.

Gellineau took the top spot in the 3000 m Men's Individual Pursuit, followed by two Cubans Jorge Gomez and Joaquin Matos.

Today is a rest day. Tomorrow will feature the Road Individual Time Trial
