Greater West Games

Parramatta Park, NSW, October 8, 2000

Great conditions and big fields made the 2000 Greater West Games Shell Cycling a successful day.

Henk Vassen (Sutherland) showed that he still has form after his 2nd in the Australian Titles last month with a strong solo with in the men's A Grade. With attacks going all day the road riders were not going to let note track riders Jeff Hopkins and Kev Aubrey hang on for a sprint finish. With a group of 4 away and about 30km to go Vassen made his move and was able to steadily increase his lead to 30 seconds over the remaining laps to the finish. Parramatta's noted sprinter (NOT!) "Antman" Challinor edged out Steve Dixon and Brad Mills for second.

The women's event was an on and off affair with the pace fluctuating wildly each lap. In the end the last hill saw 4 riders go off the front and as they approached the finish Bankstown's Rochelle Gilmore dug deep to get over Nadia Frischknecht of Turramurra.

Action started in B Grade with the mid race sprint prime which Duncan Crosby (Nth Sydney) beat Peter Biddington (Manly) for. These 2 kept it going to the finish and held of a chase bunch of 3 including new Parramatta recruit Chris Gatt.

C Grade was a fast a furious event with the pace on from the gun. With strong numbers from several clubs it was always going to be decided in a bunch gallop. The last lap was very tight with all riders trying to get to the front for the last climb. With hooks a plenty the inevitable touch of wheels brought down Andy Yee (Parramatta) and caused a split in the field. Parramatta's Kevin Young kept himself out of trouble and with some assistance of his travelling companion to the recent World Masters Track Championship had enough kick to take out the bunch sprint.

E Grade was also won by a solo breakaway established early in the race. The chasing 3 had a good break on the rest of the field but didn't have the legs to get up to the leader.
