Southern Hemisphere Cup

Calga, NSW, October 29, 2000

Over 130 Masters from all over New South Wales converged on Calga (50km north of Sydney) to contest the $2500 worth of prizes on offer at the annual Southern Hemisphere Cup, promoted by the Waratah Veteran Cyclists Club. This is first time over the race's 25 year history that it has departed from the traditional age based grading format and a record number of entries were received.

The A grade event over 81km was won by Peter Biddington from the Manly club who featured in a two man breakaway with 2nd placegetter Michael Hickman from the Waratah Club. The B grade bunch of over 45 riders stayed together for the first half of the race until the hammer was put down with the remaining riders contesting a bunch sprint and Ken Johnston of the Hunter District Club taking the honours.

The C, D and E grade events were hotly contested with many of the older 60+ riders showing that they had still remembered how to ride a bike race.

Carnegie-Caulfield CC Criterium

Mulgrave, Vic, October 29, 2000

127 riders greeted the starter in fine, cool conditions for Carnegie-Caulfield's popular Sunday morning crit.

With 17 riders, A grade's competition came at the business end of the hour. David Milward (John Beasley Cycles) took off and held a good 75-metre lead at the bell. It was then that former Aussie Road Champ. Robert "Baby Huey" Crowe ripped away from the bunch with young Johnny Clarke in his draft and Johnny's big brother Hilton Jnr (Look) third in line. As Milward approached the finishing line he appeared to ease, thinking maybe that he had it won, only to see Hilton get up by the finest of margins with a well timed throw. Chris Kypriotis crossed third with James Taylor fourth.

B grade had a much stronger field of 57. The pace wound up toward the finale as the only significant escape of the day was reeled in at three laps to go. U17 prodigy Mark French, already sporting VIS colours, was victorious in what he appeared to treat as a routine sprint. The bulk of his competition seemed much more troubled by the effort, the dash for the minor placings involved at least ten riders. The judges awarded second to Josh Van Der Veen, Adam Carter third and Tom Nankervis fourth.

Early breakaway efforts followed by constant attacking kept the 41 C graders busy throughout their race. Eventual winner Peter Riseley soloed in ahead of the hard charging bunch. David Pearce won the bunch sprint from last weeks crash victim Josh Roger who had been active in the initial break. Colin Johnston added to his collection of fourth placings.

Shane Fernando and Dean Gilmore both said farewell to D grade after slipping away with some twenty minutes to go and holding off the feeble efforts of the "bunch" at working to bring them back. Sally Robbins was rewarded for her determined efforts with third place ahead of Peter Calveros.
