A grade saw a foursome away by mid-race that proceeded to ride itself to death. As the bunch held the gap at 150 metres the escapees fell apart in a vain attempt to stay away. The capture came late in the race and saw the original breakaways promptly dropped as six drove away to eventual victory. Beasley rider Robert Wilson was convincing in the sprint leading home Russell Newnham, Dean Johnston and James Taylor. An early break in B grade too, same result - capture and the decisive move with 15 minutes to go. Anna Wilson's husband/manager/training partner David Milward took the honours in a six up sprint. Second to Dennis Bowen-Day with Chris Boone and Mike Clucas rounding out the placings. The early break succeeded in C grade as Jamie Malaswiski, Quentin Frayne and Josh Rogers took off and gained a half lap lead. Rogers was unfortunate to fall at 5 laps to go and was unable to participate in the finale. Leon Sims took the bunch kick for third from Colin Johnston. After ten minutes neutral, D grade was punished by Martin Harker who seemed intent on a long lone break. The bunch reformed on his wheel some four laps later and made sure he wore himself out by keeping him there. The sprint came after another half-hour parade behind the hapless Harker, a blanket finish with all four places within a metre of each other. Bruce Stewart nipped in ahead of Mario Giramondo, Mick Cummings and Kath Allen.
