Colombian Ladino wins for Costa Rica

Colombian Gregorio Ladino riding for the Costa Rican team won the first and longest stage of the 42nd Vuelta a Guatemala, 185 kilometres between Petén and Río Dulce. At the end of a flat stage containing three sprints and three mountain primes, Ladino finished 12 seconds in front of Mexican Carlos Manuel Hernández with Iosvani Gutiérrez (Cuba) taking third place.

The stage was marked by a long breakaway from Guatemalan cyclist, Marvin Eduardo Paz (Basic), who took off before the first intermediate sprint at Chal, Sabaneta. He gained a lead of up to 2 minutes, managing to snare all the mountain and sprint primes along the way. However, after 120 kilometres of solo effort, he was caught as rain fell on the race.

The rain reduced the speed substantially, and caused several falls, most of which were not serious except for Mario Ceijas (Bancomet) who abandoned. With 17 km to go, Rudy Ispaché (Bancomet) attacked and looked to be headed for the win until Landino bridged up near the finish and carried on solo to win the stage.

"I am satisfied," said the Colombian after the finish, who also won the mountains jersey in the Vuelta a Gautemala in 1998. "There are many stages to come, but I am sure that we can make an impression. I dedicate the win to my team and my family."
