Jeker wins it for the third time

Swiss Fabian Jeker (Festina) added a third victory to his palmares in the Escalada a Montjuich, the traditional Spanish professional season closer. In the overall classification, Jeker beat Kelme strong man, José Luis Rubiera with Mapei's Oscar Freire taking third. Jeker won the race in 1996 and 1998, but has to win four more times in order to beat Eddy Merckx's record of six victories.

The race is run in two halves, both finishing on top of Barcelona's famous Montjuich. The first stage, a 24.3 kilometre road race was won by Oscar Freire in very wet conditions. However, this did not determine the race, as the afternoon's 8.7 kilometre time trial was taken by Jeker, who was almost a minute quicker than Freire, giving him an overall 42 second advantage over the Spanish former World Champion. Jose Luis Rubiera split the two, finishing second overall.

One rider who was not in form was Kelme's Vuelta winner, Roberto Heras, who ended in 21st place after placing 17th in the road race, and 23rd in the time trial.
