Amherst Cyclocross - Cat. 3USA, October 28, 2000Johnson and Richardson win in Amherst
Tim Johnson (Saturn) and Carmen Richardson (SoBe-HeadShok) were the big winners this week at the windswept Amherst International Cyclo-Cross Race in Amherst, Mass. After battling with Saturn teammate Mark McCormack and national champ Mark Gulickson (Mongoose) through the first half of the race, Johnson built a gap going into a headwind that gusted to 45 mph on a grassy, hilltop straightaway and rode to a winning margin of 1:29. McCormack and Gulickson played cat-and-mouse at times in the contest for second until McCormack freed himself on the final lap. A Massachusetts native, Johnson said he was primed for today's win. "This was a personal win today but with good team results, too," he said. The top five was rounded out by the German duo of Tobias Nestle (FOCUS) and Jens Reuker (Rothaus), who finished up a 3-week bout of racing on the east coast.
In the Laughing Dog Cyclery women's race Richardson won for the third time in the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series by riding away from Jodi Grosbeck (Putney/West Hill) and Emily Thorne (Independent Fabrications) on the last lap. Local rider Shauna Giles-Smith (NEBC/CycleLoft/Sun Microsystems) was with the leaders until the last lap, until a crash and mechanical forced her to withdraw. Candy Angle (Bicycle Link), Seattle's Ingrid Spies (Recycled Cycles) and Kathryn Kothe (NCC/BikeReg.com) completed the top six. Saturday's 10th Amherst Cyclo-Cross was the 4th round of the Verge series, and this year's race was sanctioned by UCI for the first time, offering $3500 in prize money.
