Local heroes, Bruno Risi/Kurt Betschart/Markus Zberg have won the 48th
Zurich Six Days for the seventh time, after a dramatic final night saw
three teams finish on the same number of laps. Previous night's leaders
Madsen/Braikia/B. Zberg simply could not keep up the pace that Risi/Betschart/M.
Zberg were gaining points, and effectively lost their extra lap to finish
3rd. In second place were Juan Llaneras/Adriano Baffi/Pascal Richard,
who were too far behind to threaten the lead of the Swiss stars. Risi
and Betschart literally left it until the last minute however, to take
back a lap that Llaneras/Baffi had gained, but secured it with 750m
to go in the final madison.
One of the more interesting events of the night was the "Cirkus
Knie points race", the winner of which received a pony (perhaps
a little slower than a Fiat...). The lucky riders were Dutchmen Danny
Stam/Robert Slippens who beat Kowatschitsch/Sassone and Llaneras/Baffi.
Only 12 teams made it to the end of the sixth night, from 16 starters.
Etienne De Wilde ended up riding as a reserve after Brett Aitken withdrew
with illness at 11:30pm. However, there was still at least 4 hours of
racing to come...
Also, Matthew Gilmore had to give up the race due to an unfortunate
accident. After 30 minutes in the final 60-minute madison race, Gilmore
and his Swiss partner Alexander Aeschbach wanted to change but Italian
rider Silvio Martinello was in the way. All of them crashed and fell.
While Martinello was motionless for the first few moments and neutralized
for a few laps, Aeschbach and Gilmore could start the race again. But
some minutes later, they had to give up the race as a result of the
crash, despite holding an impressive 5th in the race.
In the stayers' competition, there were two motorpaced events held
on the final night. Carsten Podlesch and Hanskurt Brand were finally
in good enough form to win the respective events, and the eventual overall
victory went to Hanskurt Brand, behind his pacer René Aebi. Podlesch
took second place with the same number of points as Felice Puttini,
who finished third.
There were also two stages in the finale of the Six Jours de l'Avenir,
with the first being won by promising pair, Ryan Miller/Sven Epple.
They finished 3rd overall in the event, which was taken out by the very
strong French duo of Benoit Genauzeau/Julien Tejada, with Patrick Fäh/Patrick
Kraus.
A special thank you to Ernst Bretscher, Pascal Meisser and the race
organisation for supplying the detailed results, reports and pictures
during the event.
