There were more mergers and movements between the teams during the
fourth day of the Zurich Six. Scott McGrory was unable to continue in
the race due to stomach problems, and Frank Corvers was also forced
to stop. This meant that Matthew Gilmore and Oscar Camenzind had to
combine with Alexander Aeschbach, who was Frank Corvers' partner. However,
Silvio Martinello was able to rejoin the race with Marco Villa. In addition,
Stefan Steinweg, Peter Jorg and Markus Kammerman were also neutralised
during the night, meaning that a team of Laurenzo Lapage and Frank Kowatschitsch
were formed to race the 100 km madison, while Erik Weisspfennig (Steinweg's
partner) did not race at all.
A total of 5200 people came to watch the action, with the first event
being the "Fiat Autosprint", a 5 km race conducted as three
heats and a final, with a Fiat car for first prize. Matthew Gilmore
was triumphant in this over Bruno Risi and Silvio Martinello, after
six riders made the final. Matthew had already won the event in 1997,
and his father Graeme won the car sprint three times in a row from 1972-1974.
The next event for the pro's was the Mövenpick 100 kilometre madison,
the longest such race on the European circuit. This was won by Martinello/Villa
who narrowly beat Risi/Betschart and yesterday's leaders Madsen/Braikia.
At the end of the night, Risi/Betschart/M. Zberg were well on top of
the leaderboard, with 228 points compared with Madsen/Braikia/B. Zberg
on 139 and Martinello/Villa/Berzin on 134. However, once the latter
two teams pass 200 points, they will gain a bonus lap and the standings
may change.
In the Stayers race, the fourth stage was won by Christoph Göhring
(behind Peter Steiger), who beat Hanskurt Brand and Felice Puttini.
The latter just holds the overall lead with 13 points, but there are
several teams right behind him and his pacer, Roberto Pettini.
Finally in the amateurs race, Six Jours de l'Avenir, French pair Benoit
Genauzeau/Julien Tejada took a lap out of the field during the fourth
stage to win from the Wörner brothers (from Germany) and Swiss Patrick
Merk /Patrizio Frigeri. Genauzeau/Tejada are in the overall lead by
two laps now, from Patrick Fäh/Patrick Kraus and Ryan Miller/Sven Epple.
