Race #9 New England Cyclocross - Wed. Night Series Race #9Roxbury, MA, November 29, 2000 The turn out was good for our 9th race, with clear weather in the low 40's. and a decent crowd of spectators. The race started fast, with Mark Abramson jumping the gun a bit, and later launching a furious attack 1/2 lap into the race to blow it apart. Art Trapotsis, John Reilly, Shauna Gilles-Smith, Mike Ross, Andrew Yee, and Stefan Hesselberg formed a chase group and worked hard to bring Mark back. Art, avoiding flatting his tubular for once, was the true powerhouse of the chase group, with Andrew, the Hawaiian single-speed cyclocross champion, hanging on. Shauna Gilles-Smith, the Canadian National Champion, was riding spectacularly for 3 laps before suffering a mechanical that cost her a lap. Mike overcame a spectacular crash to chase back on John's wheel, who was riding well in 4th. The course eventually broke the race apart, with Art pulling away from the chase group and Andrew narrowly winning the sprint for third. The race was not without controversy, as Mark was seen taking a short cut, but the results probably would not have changed.
