Carnegie-Caulfield Cycling Club Criterium

Waverley Park, Mulgrave, Vic, November 12, 2000

25 Celsius and a clear blue sky, Melbourne turned on great weather for the Tuesday night crit except for the blustery south-easterly wind. 121 riders took the challenge and many suffered for the choice. A grade’s 24 hard men took to each other in typically vicious fashion. By half way the bunch was shattered, Tighello (Peugeot), Crowe (Fitzroy Cycles) and Moreni (Vezza-Brunero) held a 32 second lead over the chasing trio of Knoff, Lester and McEvoy. At 1:15 came the sadly depleted remainder. The gaps held until, at 3 to go, Moreni took off in the hope of a solo win. Not to be, as NATAS and State Road Champ Tighello and former National Road Champ Crowe snapped him up to finish ahead of McEvoy who slipped by Moreni in the last few metres. Moreni, who will ride neo with Gerolstiener next year, finished with a total of 170km for the day, not bad for the first week back in training!

B grade, won by Dave “Steggles” Sturt in a fiery sprint finish, was treated to repeated attacks from Mick Buckley and Katie Mactier (Fitzroy Cycles) that caused a great deal of pain. Finally caught at 3 laps to go, “Macca” wasn’t satisfied and made a valiant attempt in the set up for the sprint glued to Sturt’s wheel. Losing her position in the hurly-burly leading into the last bend, she finished in the bunch. Second to Peter Costello from Simon Morcom and Robert Reed in a sprint some ten riders across.

A successful escape in C grade with Simon Clarke teaming with Stefan Kirsch to establish a good lead that lasted till the finish. Veteran Quentin Frayne took the field sprint for third with Nick Gibson Fourth.

Jamie Peeters took the prize in D grade. The bunch suffered greatly in the wind with numbers dwindling ass the clock counted down. The sprint for the line saw wily Tony Gill manage second again from Gerard Hurley and Mick Braund.
