Jim Anderson/crosscrusade.com New Mexico Cyclocross Series Race #3Los Alamos, New Mexico, November 12, 2000 Temperature at 7:00 AM: 14 degrees Fahrenheit (10 below zero Celsius). I woke up in a cosy bed in the guest room of newlyweds Clay and Chantel, then stumbled into the kitchen where Clay was busy making pancakes. I looked out the window. 14 measly degrees. "Clay, is your thermometer right?" "Yep." It was going to be an interesting race indeed. Mix in with the temperature a nice dose of fluffy white precipitation, and you have the makings of some tough bike racing conditions. The course The snowy conditions made the ascent slow. The running on snowy and icy rocks made it hard. The run, due to the impracticability of remounting on the steeper portions of the climb, was extended to about 30 meters, and it was tough. There were several attacks on this portion of the course. After the summit, there was a winding path through the woods. This wouldn't have been tough if your heart wasn't in your mouth from the run. It was tough, though. Riders then descended down onto the road, and rocketed toward the second toughest part of the race. At the end of this 500-meter section of road, a hard left slammed racers into the second run up section. This 40-meter incline was chopped up, steep and very snowy. At the top, riders took an immediate left and descended toward the road again. We crossed the road and climbed (without running) up into the forest again. A single dismount and a descent led you onto the road and on toward the finish line. The course was a blast. It was definitely hard, but spectator-friendly and fast. The weather conditions were really pretty fun, and despite the frigid temperatures, it didn't feel too cold at all.
The racing:
C grade The C race started first. The competition is getting better all the time in C, though the field continues to be disappointingly small. Stuart Knight-Williamson was fast out of the blocks. Tim Schoeny was there, too, after taking off his road pedals and shoes. Tim took an early lead, and Stuart, marked closely by Michael Neal and Chris Osburn, followed tenaciously. Tim faded a bit and Osburn took over, dragging Neal along with him. Neal decided the absence of Taylor Lane was his opportunity, and attacked. Osburn followed closely, but Neal was riding strong. KY jr. faded back behind Schoeny and others, but he hung in there. Tove Shere was having fun as well. KY jr. pulled himself back into 3rd with a gutsy display of determination. With one lap to go, Neal had created a lead of approximately 20 seconds, Osburn seemed determined to catch him. Osburn powered through the start/finish on the bell lap, and chased hard. He closed down some of the gap, but Neal was too steady. He glided the last lap and took home a sweet, hard-earned victory. Killer
Bs The weather was continually changing during the race. When the sun was out, and the wind was dead, the weather was pleasant. Unfortunately, the weather would become cloudy, windy and snowy, from time-to-time, and this was no fun. Hunter continued his assault and eventually lapped everyone in the field, save Ramirez. An impressive ride, for sure. The next three maintained their position for the duration of the event, and finished in that order. The competition level in the Killer Bs is getting better all the time. The
A-team The gun fired, and Bart Bowen did his usual easy start. Seems this is better preparation for his Supercup schedule than firing hard from the start. Not me, though. Tim Erwin and I pushed it from the gun. Behind us, a dropped chain by Hawke Morgan spelled trouble for his competition. They were forced to stop. KY was the last into the woods. This error opened up an opportunity for Timmy and I, and we were quickly free and clear of the group. This would come at a cost. Our rapid start meant that the big whoop-de-do likened itself more to a Supercross than a cyclocross. The landing was tough, and I slammed my knee into the stem. It was one of those moments that bring a tear of pain to your eye. But I was in first and there was no way I was stopping. Within a lap or so, the pain was overcome by a bevy of other agonies that far surpassed my initial ouchie. (I forgot about this until late last night when my knee started to ache. This morning I could hardly walk. Ouch.) Tim and I were off to a huge lead, and I was feeling strong. But so was Tim was. He'd attacked, and I'd respond. I'd attack, and he'd respond. The 40-meter run section after the road was my ace. I was able to ride it, where Tim had to run. This gave me a huge advantage. Each time, though, he caught up. On the 4th time up Everest, Tim came around me and attacked. I couldn't hang on over the top, and he put 10 seconds on me. I almost conceded, but I couldn't. I tried to ride a steady race. Each time up the run, I gained back precious seconds. Behind me, KY was battling for fourth, as Bart had moved into third. Eric Townsley was giving Stevie-baby a run for his money. KY had to switch to the mountain bike, as his pedals were clogged with mud and ice. Hawke was also fighting the good fight, after his early troubles. He had worked his way back into sixth or so, and was right near Townsley. Suddenly, the snow started to dump. It was near blizzard conditions. Visibility was bad, traction was worse and morale plummeted. I knew, though, I had to take advantage. Erwin was only 10 seconds ahead, and I wanted that position. I charged and on the run, I caught and passed him. Just as I did, Bart caught the two of us and zipped by. I knew that if I could stick with Bart, I could put some time on Tim (I found out later that he had a bad case of chain suck that helped grow my lead over him). Bart and I pulled away and entered the whoop section. We went over and I retook the lead through the next run. The two of us descended the bobsled and entered Everest. Bart climbed a bit faster than I and retook the lead, but I struggled to maintain contact. For the next three laps, I had Bart within five or ten seconds. Considering his level of talent, I was enthralled and motivated even more. Eventually, Bart pulled away a bit, but I rode hard. Tim was gone now and second was mine as long as I was smooth. KY made the switch back to his cross bike (thanks to the fantastic pit work of Chris and Blake Osburn) and went on the attack. He opened a gap on Townsley and rode comfortably in fourth. Townsley must have been having some trouble however, as Hawke was catching up. I realized, too, that Tim was pulling me back a bit. My lead of 40 or so seconds had diminished to 30. I needed to be steady on my last lap to hang on. NO MISTAKES. Two weeks earlier, at the Rio Rancho race, I had entered into the same conversation with myself, and I screwed it up. I wasn't interested in repeating. The section between the Bobsled and Everest had become a bit muddy over the course of the race. As I plowed through, a chunk of mud managed to make its way into my eye. I reached up to wipe it away, dropped my front wheel into a rut, and almost crashed. "C'mon Andel!" I screamed, and got back on the path. I was close to ruining my race. I took that as a lesson, and rode very conservatively for the rest of the lap. 40 seconds from my finish, I heard the crowd scream as Bowen crossed the line. I stayed steady and did the same, 30 seconds ahead of Erwin. KY was fourth. Hawke sprinted Townsley for fifth and won. Maybe it was the Bowen family recipe Lasagna that Chantel had fixed for dinner the night before. I don't know, but I rode my best cross race of the season, and had no mechanical problems. Finally, I pulled it together. Let's see if I can do it again next weekend in Rio Rancho. See www.team.ihighway.net/cross.html for more New Mexico Cross Series information.

Rain and wind greeted the crossers on Saturday morning at the Jonathan Daniels Elementary School. The weather was not a deterrent and the course was challenging but in good shape. The infamous Frank-N-Horst descent claimed a few victims, but most of the racers negotiated the hill without incident. The highlight of the Men's A race was a McCormack brothers one-two. Both riders admitted to breaking a sweat over the last few laps as they prepared for next weeks Supercup in Boston.
