Cyclocross World Cup #2 - CDMTabor, Czech Republic, November 18, 2000
Wellens gains round 2Belgian Bart Wellens (Spaar Select) won the second round of the ATP Cyclocross World Cup in Tabor, Czech Republic. Wellens beat World Champion Richard Groenendaal and Mario de Clercq in the 7 lap race, meaning that both Wellens and Groenendaal now share the lead in the World Cup standings on 110 points. The course was exactly the same that will be used in the World Championships in January 2001, and the Belgians took the early lead. Erwin Vervecken (RVS Liege) and Sven Nijs (Rabobank) led the pack for the first lap until Groenendaal took over in lap 2. Vervecken fell off and Nijs dropped back, still on the comeback trail after recovering from a knee injury. Bart Wellens managed to get back onto Groenendaal's wheel before half way and the two fought it out. Wellens eventually sprinted with half a kilometre to go, and beat Groenendaal by a small margin.
