Women's reports Women's results Men's reports Men's results Women: Blatter hangs on from new leader DunlapRound four of the MTB World Cup was held in St Wendel, Germany in front of a very enthusiastic crowd of 25,000. Once again, there was a different winner in each of the men's and women's events, with Switzerland's Barabara Blatter (Scott USA) narrowly beating equal series leader, Alison Dunlap (Team GT) in the five lap women's race. Last week's winner, Maragita Fullana (Spa, Subaru-Specialized) crashed but came in third in front of Australia's Mary Grigson (Gary Fisher/Saab).This meant that Dunlap took the lead for the first time in the World Cup series, 50 points clear of Grigson with another four rounds to race. The 7.2 kilometre course was slightly damp after overnight rain, but the prevailing conditions were dry. A fast race early on saw Margarite Fullana crash, allowing Barbara Blatter to take the lead at the end of the first lap. She was closely followed by Paola Pezzo (Ita, Gary Fisher/Saab with the ever consistent Alison Dunlap in third. Mary Grigson was somewhat off the pace in ninth but was set to move up later. Blatter maintained her lead through the next two laps but was eventually passed by Pezzo on the penultimate lap. However, Pezzo crashed on a descent giving Mary Grigson second place in front of Dunlap after a great move. Grigson felt the effort though, and dropped back to fourth by the finish, but Blatter still managed to hold on to the lead by a mere 8 seconds from Dunlap. Pezzo had the consolation of fifth place on the podium after recovering from her crash somewhat. Blatter has been riding consistently for the past few rounds, scoring well in each but out of the top five. She was nervous when Pezzo passed her because she knew that the Italian was strong. But the crash put paid to that, although she said she was surprised that Dunlap came so close by the finish. For her part, Dunlap rode hard without feeling 100%. She was happy, as her aim was to gain the World Cup leader's jersey from Grigson. She said she needed another climb to get past Blatter, but was "seeing stars all the way to the finish". The World Cup continues next weekend at Sarentino, Italy.

He was amongst the lead for the entire day as he rode away with four others in the early laps, beating Bas Van Dooren (Be-One) and Miguel Martinez (Full Dynamix) for the honours. The win gave him enough points to take the lead in the World Cup ahead of today's second placed Bas Van Dooren. The other rider in the break was last week's winner, Filip Meirhaeghe (Subaru-Specialized) who worked with the group until he had mechanical problems on lap 6. Beat Wabel and Thomas Hochstrasser (Switzerland) managed to bridge to the leaders before this, and Hochstrasser was even able to go with Martinez when he attacked with three laps to go. The attack ran out of steam though, as Dupouey passed Martinez with two to go, as did Van Dooren later. The three finished in that order with Wabel and Hochstrasser hanging on for 4th and 5th. Dupouey chose not to go with Martinez on lap five, claiming he was waiting for Meirhaeghe to attack. However, the Belgian couldn't find it and subesquently suffered a mechanical, so Dupouey moved up to catch Martinez. The tactic, and the strength of the French World Champion held and he won the race by 22 seconds in front of Van Dooren. The second placed rider, Van Dooren was happy but a little disappointed with his final position, claiming that he didn't like the tactical style of racing. Martinez was happy as well reminiscing of the days he rode with Dupouey in Sunn. Australia's Cadel Evans continued his comeback after breaking his collarbone a few weeks ago. Evans finished 19th today, just in front of teammate Pail Rowney, the best of the Australian camp.
