Stage 3 - May 21: Dro - Dro ITT, 3.1 km

Sundstedt prevails in TT & overall

By Alessandro Gretter

It was only 3.1 Km ITT but very difficult. Many corners, a lot of wind and in the finale, a 300 m long climb at 10% or greater made the difference.

Pia Sundstedt (Gas Sport) confirmed that she was the best cyclist of the moment. In fact she rode the stage at about 44 km/h, beating Boubnenkova and Ziliute who were both really fast over the flat part of the ITT. This gave her the final classification of the 7th edition of this Giro.

Teammate Fabiana Luperini had seemingly returned to the top, forgetting the troubles she faced in the previous months because of a doping investigation. Today, she took 4th place, finishing 2nd overall.

There were some good results for the English-speaking cyclists: the 20-year old British rider Ceris Gilfillan rode to a great 5th place winning the special classification for the Under 22s. Tracey Gaudry (Australia/Timex) was just behind at 12 seconds in 7th position. Additionally in the top 20 were Sara Carrigan (11th), Brit Megan Hughes (17th) and Alison Wright who was 20th.
