Annelise Stander (EP) Under-23 Road Race, May 27, 2000The IBM/Lotus u23 team took control of their age category with Alwyn Scheepers, James Perry and Owen Hannie riding away from the rest of the field. Alwyn Scheepers started the breakdown and was on his own for a 100km. The peleton caught him and again he took the initiative with Owen Hannie. James Perry jumped across the gap and with the remainder of the field trailing, it came down to a sprint finish. Alwyn Scheepers (RSA) IBM-Lotus Elite Men's time-trial, May 26In the Elite Time-Trial no one could come close to Robert Hunter. US Postal's David George came through in 2nd and Simon Kessler in third place. The 2000 Argus Cycle Tour [http:--www.cycletour.org.za] winner Morne Bester was 4th and Amore & Vita's Ryan Cox coming through in 5th. Results - 40 km1. Ryan Cox (RSA) Amore & Vita 4.17 Under 23 Time trial, May 26, 2000James Perry also earned the honours in the u23 time trial with an excellent time over the 40km route, which would have placed him 2nd in the Elite section. Alex Galvin (RSA) IBM-Lotus 3.55 Men's Elite Road, May 28, 2000In the Elite road race on Sunday it was Minolta's Simon Kessler, who won for the second time in 3 years. A break of 9 riders formed after 30km, containing 3 riders from the Minolta team. Favourite Robert Hunter was closely marked (to their detriment) by the HSBC team. With 40km to go, the gap to the peleton had grown to 5 minutes. After numerous attacks by David George on the last climb, Kessler launched a counter attack from Ryan Cox and succeeded in getting away from the 5 riders as they crested the hill, 6km from the finish.
