54th Tour de l'Oise et de Picardie - 2.2France, May 12-14, 2000Main Page ResultsStage 1 - May 12: Creil - Le Crotoy, 170 kmHushovd Credits his teamStage one of the Tour de l'Oise et de Picardie saw Credit Agricole's young Norwegian star, Thor Hushovd claim victory after a very fast stage. The 170 kilometres between Creil and Le Crotoy was conducted at the frightening pace of 48.85 km/h, beginning quickly and remaining that way. Hushovd also claimed the first leader's jersey after the time bonuses had been worked out, and he is in front of Ag2r's Jaan Kirsipuu (last year's winner) by four seconds. The speed at the beginning saw a large group (26 riders) attack at the 20 kilometre point, gaining up to a minute before they were caught a 67 kilometres. The pack held for a while until a smaller, seven rider break went at kilometre 100. This included favourites Maarten den Bakker (Rabobank), Jacky Durand (Lotto), Arvis Piziks (MC J&J), Fabrice Gougot (CA), Andreas Sauerborn (Gerolsteiner), Jay Sweet (Big Mat) and Tom Stremeersch (Vl 2002). The seven gained 1.20 on the still fast moving pack, being led by Cofidis, Ag2r, Bonjour and Jean Delatour who had missed the move. They were caught, although Durand tried his hand again with Skibby (MC J&J) and Trastour (Jean Delatour). With 20 kilometres to go, these three were joined by Innar Mandoja (Est, Ag2R) and another Memorycard rider, Michaël Sandstod. The five held a 15 second lead all the way to the finish, but they were eventually caught with one kilometre to go. In a surprise, Thor Hushovd managed to outwit and outsprint Jaan Kirsipuu, who was the clear favourite for the stage, followed by Jean-Patrick Nazon (FdJ) in third. A former winner of the espoir (U23) versions of Paris-Roubaix and Paris-Tours, Hushovd knew he could rely on his teammates to bring him to the finish. With Stuart O'Grady and Magnus Backstedt as lead out men, he had a good start. This was also his first professional victory outside his home of Norway, where he won several stages of the Ringerike Grand Prix last month. Hushovd said afterwards that he would try and maintain his leader's jersey in tomorrow's 204 kilometre stage from Crécy to Soissons, with an eye on the final overall. The race also saw the re-entry of Belgian Frank Vandenbroucke to the fray, and the Cofidis rider didn't perform too badly, finishing 17th in the bunch.
