The stage honours went to Cantina Tollo's Rodolfo Massi, in one of his best results since the 1998 Tour before the inquisition began. Now cleared of charges, Massi went on the attack in the first few kilometres of the stage, all uphill. At the top of the 600 m high Côte de Mondardier, he had 40 seconds on a chasing group containing Vinokourov, Moreau and four others. Telekom's Jan Ullrich was already in trouble and later abandoned the stage. A regrouping followed, but the seven leaders no longer contained Vino (who had fallen on the descent) or Moreau, who was dropped. Kivilev, Maignan (Ag2r), Loda (Fassa), Dumont (Besson), Massi (Cantina Tollo), Gobbi (Mobilvetta) and Tessier (Jean Delatour) had 35 seconds on the next leading group that was being driven by Bonjour who were trying to keep Rous in yellow. At kilometre 90 (St Guilhem le désert), the leaders had over 5 minutes - their maximum advantage, and they lost 3 minutes in the next 40 kilometres. Telekom still had Totschnig in the lead group, and were driving the chasers but most of them had enough to stay away. Massi attacked on the finishing circuit up the Mont St Clair in Sète and took the stage by 19 seconds from Kivilev. Dumont followed some 10 seconds back, with Loda in fourth at 1.16. Totschnig didn't have the legs to attack Rous, who finished with an overall lead of 8 seconds on the Austrian climber. It was a good race for the Austrians and Slovenians, with Tadej Valjavec (Slo, Fassa Bortolo) leadfrogging for third overall, followed by Telekom's Gerhard Trampusch (Aut), and yesterday's stage winner Gorazd Stangelj (Liquigas) from Slovenia.
