The first flat stage on the Grand Prix du Midi Libre ended in a bunch sprint, with victory for two brothers. Damien (Bonjour) and Jean-Patrick (FdJ) Nazon finished 1-2 at the end of the 193 km first stage from Palavas to Port-Barcarès, just in front of Credit Agricole's Stuart O'Grady. The latter seems to be sharpening his legs up for an attack on the Green Jersey in the Tour. The unfortunate news at the start was that last year's winner, Benoit Salmon (Ag2r) would not be able to defend his title this year. A victim of gastro, he was forced to sit on the sidelines. A slow first hour passed, where the riders only covered 37 kilometres - unlike the Tour de l'Oise et de Picardie on the weekend, were speeds of 50 km/h were the norm. Two riders had escaped: Sebastien Laroche (Besson) and Bert Scheirlinckx (Collstrop), and they had nearly 4 minutes after an hour. This gap grew to nearly 11 minutes with 82 kilometres to go, before the bunch finally reacted. La Francaise des Jeux, Big Mat and Jean Delatour were all prominent at the front, and the two breakaways were caught with 12 kilometres to go. The increase in speed at the end saw three falls occur, one involving Jan Ullrich, but none too serious. However, the bunch was split by the finish into four main pieces spread out over a minute. US Postal's Benoit Joachim tried to attack for the stage win, and he managed a 55 second gap and was joined by three others, including Thierry Gouvenou (Big Mat). Joachim attacked with 2 kilometres to go but was caught well before the sprint. Damien Nazon (Bonjour) out sprinted his brother Jean-Patrick (FdJ) for the win, and will wear the leader's jersey tomorrow with a 3 second advantage over O'Grady, who picked up a time bonus along the way. Jan Ullrich's long awaited return saw the German finish in the third group, 46 seconds down on the winner, in 76th spot.
