The technical course included a small climb just after the start/finish, which combined with the heat, took a toll on the peloton. On the second lap two groups broke away from the main field. The second group was eventually absorbed back into the pack and with 7 laps to go the final selection of the day was complete. A group of nine riders had a 1:30 gap on the main field, which was shrinking fast. Included in that group of 9 were Stephen Kincaid (Team Bicycle Therapy), Rafal Urzedowski (Watchung Wheelmen), George Menard (Annapolis Bike Club), Jerzy Wozniak (YSG Racing), Mark Light (Team Snow Valley), Mike Pudlinski (Wendy's/Allsport), and Rob Coulton (Main Line Cycling). Wozniak and Coulton broke away with 4 laps remaining and with 3 to go had a 25 second lead on a chase group of six. At this point the main field was almost 5 minutes in arrears. When the 2 leaders came past the start/finish with the final two laps to complete they had a 30-second lead over Urzedowski and 35 seconds on a group of four. At the bell lap Wozniak and Coulton maintained their advantage of 30 seconds over Urzedowski with Kincaid, Pudlinski, and Light 35 seconds off of the pace. Wozniak out sprinted Coulton to take a hard-earned victory on a very challenging course under extreme heat and humidity. Results Cat 1-2-3 (18 laps - 40.5 miles) 1. The finishing circuit of 12 km was covered 5 times and included the 1 km (17%) Gamber Wall. A 4 man break entered the circuit with one minute's lead and four others, including Dean Rittenhouse (Snow Valley) and Gutsovo Carrillo (Higher Gear) bridged up approching the second ascent of the wall. On the last lap Rittenhouse and Carrillo attacked again and got free. At the finish, it was Rittenhouse taking the sprint and the victory. Results - Men 1/2/3 ,127 km 1. This 3-day/4-stage race has a relatively small turnout. I don't know whether it's because of the conflicting races, or the fact that women are afraid it's too hard! Stage 1 - May 5: Bena Individual Time Trial, 10 miles 10 mile TT, out and back, with a little "kicker" of a climb on the way back. In years past, I've grinded out the hill in my big chain ring, and tended to blow up with about 1K to go! I ended up dropping into my small ring, but couldn't get it back into the big ring, so ended up spinning away in my 42-11. Good for me that I was relatively speedy for the first 9 miles. Results 1. Adelaide Hill Climb, 13 miles After a 3 hour break, we were back in motion for a 13 mile hill climb. This climb has 2 descents to break up the climbing monotony...and help keep us cool in the heat. We had a nice tail wind, which made it even hotter. We started fast, and continued at a feverish pace until there were only 5 up the road and the rest of us scattered among the cows. Apparently, up the road it was Caren Spore, Megan Troxell and Jenny Eyerman in a 3 up sprint at the finish. Results 1. Caren Spore (USA) Davis Bike Club 2. Megan Troxell (USA) Shaklee 3. It starts with about a 5 mile downhill/tailwind stretch, followed by a gradual 5 mile climb, followed by some rollers. Then it pitches steeply up for one mile, then lots of rollers to a killer downhill. You then have to make a U-turn (over a small gravel section) to a slightly uphill finish (with a tailwind). The first climb was relatively mellow, with the steep climb burning my legs up - thank goodness for a 25, because I hung in there! On one of the longer rollers, Jenny Eyerman (Jane's) launched a fierce attack that I wasn't able to cover, but my teammate Cindy Mommsen did, along with 4 others. The six of them quickly got a good gap, which was maintained with the help of some "blocking" by Aileen Loe (she had 2 Jane's teammates up the road) and yours truly. Frankly I'm not sure we were blocking or just plain tired! They break held a gap of 1:30 for the next lap, which then grew to 2 minutes. At the start of the 3rd lap, they had 4 minutes. Back in the main group, we were content to ride tempo on the last lap. I thought about attacking over the last roller before the last 2 miles, but that thought went away quickly as I felt the fierce headwind! I came to a standstill in the small gravel section, but managed make up a little ground in the finishing sprint, and hold on for 10th. Results 1. Caren Spore (USA) Davis Bike Club 2. The final stage of this race is a 60 mile road race, consisting of 3 laps of a 20 mile circuit. The first 10 miles are downhill and flat, followed by a right turn onto a flat stretch of road with small rollers, then you make the final turn and climb what seems to be forever, as you gaze longingly at the finish line, which you can see forever! Well, when we woke up in the town of Mojave (40 miles south), the wind was blowing pretty hard. Little did we know that it would get worse when we arrived in Randsburg at 8AM. The last 3 years, there's always been some wind, but NEVER like this. We had heard on the radio that "high profile vehicles" should be careful, as the wind was recorded at 50-60 miles an hour in some areas. At the start, we agreed to shorten the race to 40 miles, which was a good idea! Prior to the race, I had a chat with my former teammate, and pal, Aileen Loe (Jane's Cosmetics), and we decided we'd attempt one of our all too famous breakaways on the first lap seeing as we weren't a threat to the top 3 on GC. And it would force Megan Troxell and Caren Spore to chase. We first do a promenade lap in town - there's no one there cheering us on, but boy would it be a cool crit course! As we started down the hill we were abruptly awakened by the stiff head/cross wind, which blew our bikes all over the place. Any deep dish wheels were being thrown side to side! After the downhill, Aileen and I attempted to go, but were chased down after several minutes. I knew this was going to be tough. As we turned the corner and had a tailwind, Jenny Eyerman launched a fierce attack, and Megan Troxell went with her. The 2 got a good gap, and we waited for Caren Spore to start the chase (as Jenny was in 3rd). That she did, and we were head down in the gutter. We dropped several riders, during this segment. And then Annelie, my teammate Cindy Mommsen and Caren got away from us and proceeded to chase the 2 off the front, which they caught. I made Joy Schaffer chase them down, and sat comfortably in her draft. When we turned for the final climb, we could see the 4 of them, and Cindy in the middle. Halfway up the climb, we caught them all and proceeded to ride, 8 abreast due to the cross wind, towards the top. There was a time bonus at the top of the climb, which I believe Jenny snagged. We all regrouped after that, dreading the downhill windy stretch. Off we went on the final lap, pacelining down the hill trying to keep our bikes upright. Right before the turn, we went across the railroad tracks, and Caren Spore broke a spoke. At this point, Jenny launched another attack, but we all covered it, but the pace picked up. After about 5 miles of chasing, Caren caught us, but then Annelie launched a beautiful attack with Megan on her wheel. The 2 got a good gap, and held it to the finish, with Megan eventually dropping Annelie on the climb. With the gap that she held, Annelie moved into 2nd place. The rest of us sauntered up the hill, and with 200 meters to go, it was a sprint to the line. Results 1. Megan Troxell (USA) Shaklee 2. Annelie Chapman (USA) Jane's Cosmetics 3.
