A small 79 rider, field for the road season’s second Modella Hilly road race. The overnight rain had eased to passing showers, no doubt the damp conditions reduced the numbers, but the racing went on for the few.

With the Tour of Bright to be run next weekend the 19 riders in A grade took the opportunity to test their legs over the two 40km laps that make up the hill course. The bunch came to the finish led by Mildara Blass strongman Brendan Gilholme who had taken responsibility for much of the pacemaking throughout the second lap. Gilholme won ahead of Hilton Clarke jnr (Look), Ashley Goewie and youngster Michael Gill (Terry Hammond Cycles)

20 strong, B grade hammered away at each other leaving the bunch fragmented in the hills only to regroup on the flatter roads. Catching the C grade bunch with a scant three km to go resulted in a difficult judging task as both groups managed to merge and sprint together! Veteran Geoff Thompson was the clear winner with U15 Johnny Clarke second. The minor placings eventually awarded to B Little and Steve Dew.

C grade also splintered in the hills with the youngsters making good use of excellent recovery abilities to take advantage of the aforementioned B grade lead out. Luke French led home Andy Van Slobbe from Michael Ford and Alan Schnable.

The 14 starters in D grade rode the first lap under control, Matt Dowling then taking off to win alone with a display of strength worthy of promotion to C grade. David Hill got the better of John Groves in the sprint for second and Colin Johnson held on for fourth.
