Sonny Barnes Memorial 100 km Road Handicap

Modella, Victoria, May 21, 2000

Harsh conditions conspired to reduce the field for the 2000 Sonny Barnes Memorial handicap. Many riders, from all marks, abandoned thoughts of starting the race as they passed through nearby Pakenham in a fierce rainstorm. The irony was that, despite passing showers at the start line during the running of the race, the riders arrived dry after completing the two 50km laps. Just proves that the race goes to the strong hearted.

A total of 63 started with 8 limit markers receiving a 31 minute start, next 10 riders at 21minutes, 8 at 17 minutes, 8 at 13 minutes, 12 at 9 minutes, 9 at 5 minutes all ahead of the 8 scratch markers.

After the first flat, 50km lap through Longwarry, Tynong, Bayles and back to Modella the field had aggregated into three bunches. The combined 9 and 13 minute bunches looked particularly strong at half distance with scratch and 2nd scratch together trying hard, without success however as they actually lost time to the bunch ahead in the second lap. The remnants of the 21 minute bunch had passed through the line almost unnoticed, only five left gamely hanging on to a fair lead, not many held too much hope for them.

Hold on they did however, working solid steady turns with riders contributing to their maximum. The effort was huge but rewarded by the sight of the finish line and the absence of the storming scratchmen. Tim Nuttall started the dash but too early, fading badly in the last metres.

Anthony Comino won by a length to Peter Howard, Colin Rourke (collecting $ for the first time in his career) Le Knicks’ Louisa Hamilton-White and Tim Nuttall.

The sprint for fastest time saw Ashley Goewie go for it from 150 metres with U19 Michael Gill (Terry Hammond Cycles) patiently in his wheel. Gill flicked by with 50m to go and took the prize for the time looking for all the world like he was riding home from work!
