That was how they finished with Melanie adding her name to a Championship that is one year older than the BCF, with the trophy showing such names as Beryl Burton, Mandy Jones, and Lisa Brambini. In amazing sunshine 54 riders, from the 64 on the race programme, lined up and it was Corri Farquharson (Welland Valley CC) and Sally Boyden (Clarke Contracts) who led for the first 150 metres of the race, but that was the highlight of Corri's race. Sally Boyden, bravely riding to defend her title but in pain from a back problem which had dogged her for a week, and the rest of the riders tackled the first of the climbs as a few of the less fit slid from the back. Active at the front were Julie Hooper (Letchworth Extran) and Nicole Cooke. Mid way through the second of the 10 kilometre laps it was Hooper who made the first break with a maximum gap of 18 seconds but by the start of the third lap it was all together. Start of the fifth lap and the race was together except for a few who had lost contact. Next to try was Sara Dean (Oxford City RC) who led by 35 seconds by the 4th lap but she was also caught but again it was youngster Cooke who was doing most of the attacking but not able to get that vital gap. By the 8th lap the bunch was now down to 18 riders with defending champion Boyden adrift by 10 seconds with Susan O'Mara (Dublin Wheelers). The main group was doing steady miles now and the whittling down came at the back of the bunch. Into the final lap and it was sad to see Sally Boyden in considerable pain and not able to complete the race. Sue Thomas crashed on the third lap and with bad grazes and a painful shoulder, went to hospital for a check up. 38 riders finished the championship with a strong representation from Jersey, Guernsey.
