39th Rund um den Henninger Turm - 1.1Germany, May 1, 2000
1999 Results Start list Past Winners Hundertmarck takes his Turm for TelekomEdition number 39 of the German classic, Rund um den Henninger Turm ended in yet another victory for Deutsche Telekom as Kai Hundertmarck triumphed after a long breakaway. Last year it was Erik Zabel, but this time the World Cup leader played a supporting role as Hundertmarck and three others stayed away for a large portion of the 206 kilometre race. The break happened almost straight after the neutral section, as Hundertmarck and 9 others attacked, although three more bridged later. Jens Heppner was also there for Telekom, as were Joern Reuss (Nürnberger) and Matteo Tosatto (Fassa Bortolo). These were the final four that escaped from the rest, including Malte Urban (Coast), Sven Teutenberg (Gerolsteiner), D. Gualdi (Mobilvetta), and Aleksandr Sheffr (Alessio). They quickly established a two minute lead on the bunch who were not willing to chase hard with most of the major teams represented. At approximately halfway, the four riders (Hundertmarck, Heppner, Tosatto, and Reuss) dropped the rest after the second time up the Mammonshainer climb (800 m high). They in turn established a two minute break to the chasers, who were now down to six. The main bunch were nearly 8 minutes behind and had given up completely. With 60 kilometres to go, Ruess couldn't follow any more, and he quickly went out the back of the chase group as well. Three left, with two Telekom riders and Heppner winning all of the mountains: there could only be one result. However, the three leaders took a wrong turn on the way into Frankfurt and lost one and a half minutes of the four minute lead (at that point). Race Director, Dietrich Thurau said that "it was a disaster, but fortunately I knew the area well and we could settle the situation." Back on track and on the finishing circuits, Heppner indicated to Hundertmarck that he should attack and he did with five kilometres to go. "Those last five kilometres were the hardest of my life. I had cramps and I only believed that I could win when I reached the finish," said 31 year old Hundertmarck after he crossed the line triumphantly, with 18 seconds to spare on Tossato in second place. "I can not imagine anything greater in cycling than winning the Henninger Turm," he said becoming the sixth German victor in 39 years of this race. The two million spectators, mostly German, and the local Telekom representative, were pleased.

Dirk Hiss (Ger) VzFbR Eichstetten PreviewThe 39th edition of the Rund um den Henninger Turm will be World Cup leader, Erik Zabel's last race for a short while. Although it was previously a round of the World Cup, in recent years it has been downgraded a notch to category 1.1, but Zabel would probably enjoy keeping the UCI points that he won here last year. He considers World Champion Oscar Freire to be his most dangerous rival, although the Mapei rider has had a busy weekend in Italy (Larciano on Saturday) and the RAI Derny race on Sunday. He supposedly has a cold, but will likely line up on Monday for the 206 kilometre German race. On the other hand, Zabel has the benefit of a very strong and motivated team with Elli, Fagnini, Aldag, Bölts, Heppner, Hundertmark and Alexandre Vinokourov, with Ullrich distinctly lacking. Freire isn't too badly off either, with Merckx, Van Heeswijk and Beltran to help. However, with all their recent success, a good result in this race might see the German Telekom team topple Mapei from their number one spot. Zabel has had a very solid season so far and will take a break this week after Henninger. "Easy riding for one week," he says. Then, he'll ride the Tour of Bavaria on May 17 and the Tour of Germany shortly afterward as he builds up for the next goal, the sprint jersey and stage victories in the Tour de France.
