21st Int. Bayern Rundfarht - Cat. 2.4Germany, May 17-21, 2000Main Page Results Previous stageStage 3 - May 19: Roding - Bamberg, 218 kmStrazzer takes the kick in third stageStage three of the Bayern Rundfarht ended in another bunch sprint today, but it was not to be a victory for Erik Zabel this time. He was preceeded by two Italian's, Salvatore Commesso (Saeco) and Massimo Strazzer (Alessio), with the latter winning the stage. It was the longest, although not the hardest, stage of the race, covering 213 kilometres from Roding to Bamberg. While Credit Agricole are busy fighting it out in the Midi Libre, their German GC man, Jens Voigt, is doing the hard yards for them in Bavaria. Voigt still has the lead over Gerolsteiner's Michael Rich with two stages to go. After a brief rain shower, the riders got off to a slowish start, looking to save themselves for the "queen stage" tomorrow. After 25 kilometres, the rain eased and the attacks started. Arnold Eisel (Aut, Bosch Hausgeräte) made the first impression, managing a two minute lead before being caught after 50 kilometres by himself. On the main climb of the Wichsenstein (540 m), a split occured in front, with 19 riders establishing a gap on the rest of the bunch over the top. All the favourites were there, so no-one wished to work to make it happen, and they were caught not long after. The bunch then continued to amble along, being 30 minutes behind schedule at one point, before opening up in the final few kilometres. Torsten Schmidt (Gerolsteiner) attempted to escape but he was caught with 5 kilometres to go and the race came down to a sprint, won by Strazzer from Commesso and Zabel. Tomorrow's fourth stage is shorter at 174 kilometres from Bamberg to Coburg, containing several climbs.
