16th Tour de l'Aude - 2.9.1France, May 5-14, 2000Main Page Anna Wilson's report Results Previous stageStage 2b - May 7: Pradelles-Cabardès - Rieux-Minervois, 66 kmKupfernagel regainsThe afternoon's stage 66 kilometres from Pradelles-Cabardès to Rieux-Minervois was not as straighforward as it seemed for the new leader, Geraldine Loewenguth (France). She was surprised by a five woman break containing none other than Hanka Kupfernagel, Ina Teutenberg (Germany), Mirjam Melchers (Ned), Heidi Van De Vijver (Vlaanderen 2002), and the Ukrainian Tatiana Stiajkina (2nd in the morning stage). The five became three after Van de Vijver was dropped as well as Stiajkina, allowing Ina Teutenberg to take the stage from Melchers, and Kupfernagel the overall lead. Loewenguth lost over three minutes on the tough, windy stage and slipped to second overall, but many of the peloton lost more than 10 minutes. Tomorrow's stage 3 will be 127 kilometres between the St. Lawrence de Cabrerisse and Durban-Corbières. Anna Wilson's reportWe had a few hours to rest and then the afternoon stage began. By the time we started it was raining and spirits were not too high. That was to cost us dearly because the race went absolutely flat out from the gun and straight down a wet descent. The pace was on and we were badly positioned and none of us made the front group on the descent. Clara was the first to react to the situation and she descended with amazing speed and got within 10 seconds of the leaders at the bottom. However, then it went straight up a 5 km climb and Clara had just missed getting to the group at the bottom and could not catch them going up. In the lead group was Hanka Kupfernagel, Ina Teutenberg, Heidi van de Vijver, Stiajkina and Miriam Melchers and a Dutch rider I can't remember the name of [Madeleine Lindberg of Sweden but riding for Farm Frites-Hartol]. I was about 20 seconds behind Clara as the climb began with quite a big group of riders, including Lyne. We soon picked up Clara but made no inroads on the leaders. The newly crowned yellow jersey of Geraldine Loewengeuth had also missed the move and as soon as she discovered this she took off up the climb. No one could follow her. We crested the climb about one minute behind the leaders and there was some confusion for a little while as to what we should do since our director was receiving incorrect information over the radio. Finally Dede, Clara, Lyne and I all got together and began to chase. The wind was fierce and it was certainly tough chasing. We chased for about 10 kms and made absolutely no inroads on the leaders. Lyne was suffering a lot by this stage and Dede was also feeling not so good - she has been coming down with a cold. So we weren't looking so strong. We abandoned the chase and rode tempo for the rest of the stage, finishing a massive 10 minutes behind the first place. Out in front the wind took its toll. Only three riders finished together - Ina Teutenberg winning the stage from Miriam Melchers and Hanka Kupfernagel. Heidi van de Veiver finished another couple of minutes back and then Stiajkina and Geraldine Loewengeuth finished together about 3 and a half minutes behind. The Dutch rider I could not remember the name of (Lindberg) finished by herself, 5 minutes behind the first riders. So a massive upset today in the tour with only 4 riders now within 5 minutes of first place on GC. Hanka Kupfernagel has a good lead in the overall standings after two strong rides today. We weren't too happy with our performances this afternoon but there is certainly plenty of racing left and maybe more huge time gaps to come as well. Tomorrow we race 126 kms over an undulating course.
