New leader

Stage 2 of the Giro d'Abruzzo saw a new leader in the classification after Ceramica's Vladimir Duma won the stage and moved into the lead on a very hot day. Duma beat Mercatone-Uno's Daniele De Paoli (Ita) in a two up sprint, with Cermaica's Tom Leaper (Aus) a little further behind, and these three now hold the top three positions on GC.

Yesterday's winner, Gianluca Bortolami (Vini Caldirola) lost nearly 7 minutes, while Danilo Di Luca (Cantina Tollo) lost 8 minutes.

Stage 3 - May 4: Tortoreto Lido-Tortoreto Paese, 164.5 km

Another new leader: Di Luca comes good

Despite suffering in yesterday's heat, Cantina Tollo's Danilo Di Luca made it clear that he could uphill today as he won the third stage of the Giro d'Abruzzo. The 164 kilometre stage from Tortoreto Lido to Tortoreto Paese was won by Di Luca from Besson Chaussures' Serguei Yakovlev although not before Fabio Roscioli (Costa de Almeria) made one of his trademark attacks for 115 kilometres.

Danilo Di Luca commented afterwards that his main objective in the tour was to win a stage, and he achieved that today. He has similar plans for the Giro, hoping to win a stage and maybe a pink jersey, but that remains to be seen. He credited his team with the victory today, as they had sheltered him until the final climb, where he was able to chase down and attack two Mercatone-Uno riders, Oscar Mason and Daniele De Paoli with less than a kilometre to go.

In the process though, De Paoli captured the leader's jersey from Vladimir Duma with three stages to go.
