Australian Women's Road Coach, James Victor, has been training his squad hard for the coming season, with the long term goal being the Olympic Games. However, in the short term there is the upcoming Tour de Snowy and World Cup in Canberra. As a prelude to this, he has kindly supplied cyclingnews with some (not all!) details of their recent training camp at Thredbo:
The group included all Olympic Women's Road & MTB squad members, except one, as well as recommendations from state ITC programs. Also joining the group was Bianca Netzler who will be representing Samoa in the Olympic Road Race, after qualifying through last December Oceania championship.
As you can see by the training below, some good quality and quantity for the start of a big campaign this year. Most of the women had been working with their respective state ITC programs, through the Bay Criterium Series and Australian Open competitions.
The interstate riders arrived in Canberra on Australia Day, and only Anna and Liz Tadich have since returned to Melbourne after our Thredbo portion of the camp, for their Tour de Snowy and World Cup preparations.
The Thredbo training has become an important loading block for the women of the past 3 years, and as well as familiarising themselves with the terrain for the Tour de Snowy. On our return to the AIS in Canberra, we spend the month leading into the Tour de Snowy utilising the BOC Altitude House, whereby the women sleep at a simulated 2000+ metres, and train around Canberra (530 metres).
So the step from Thredbo (1400 metres) into our next loading block, with the altitude house, has now been refined over the past 3 years, and is now a very beneficial stage of the early season preparation.
The AIS Sports Science department in Canberra, with the Road Cycling programs being serviced by Dr. Dave Martin and staff, has provided priceless support, having conducted invaluable sports science research on the Women's Road Cycling program over the past 4 years. With the incorporation of SRM cranks in both training and competition, we have been able to assess the requirements of international level competition, including 5 of the 9 rounds of the 1999 World Cup which everyone remembers Anna won.
SRM's have been criticised in the past for their inaccuracies, extra weight and cost. I would love to tell you more about what has been revealed from the data collected, how accurate we have refined the data, and the revelations from the women's peloton. However, the rest of the world is very curious at the moment about our Olympic preparations, and why Australian Women's Road Cycling continues to improve. I believe the data and our application of the information back into training protocols would tell a very enlightening story..... so you can read all about it "after the Olympics".
