Stage 6 - March 13: Montegranaro-Monte San Giusto, 149 km

Oscar does it again

He seems to be unstoppable at the moment, back problems and all. Spanish World Champion, Oscar Freire (Mapei) has once again showed his sprinting prowess in taking the sixth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico between Montegranaro and Monte San Giusto today. This time he bested Peter van Petegem (Bel, Farm Frites) and former leader, Romans Vainsteins (Lat, Vini Caldirola) as the bunch powered home.

It was a challenging stage in terms of terrain, but not quite enough to shed all the sprinters, and as such it was well suited to one of Freire's talents. Towards the end of the stage, Italian riders Michele Coppolillo (Mercatone Uno) and Paolo Bettini (Mapei) lauched their attacks, but were unsuccessful. Rolf Sørenson also tried in order to test his condition for the Milan San Remo. He had a small gap into the last kilometer but it was not enough.

Last year's Tour of Flanders winner, Peter van Petegem, led out the sprint, but was overtaken with 200 meters to go by the Spaniard, with Vainsteins nipping at his heels for third. It was Freire's second victory in the race after he won the first stage around Sorrento.

Compatriot Abraham Olano (ONCE) retained his yellow jersey over Vitalicio Seguros' Jan Hruska, with two more stages to go. Teammate Laurent Jalabert, who was expected by many of the French to win this race, said that he would continue to work for Olano: "I obeyed, and I will place myself now at the disposal of Olano, as the important thing is for the team to win," he said.

Tomorrow's second to last stage is of 214 kilometers, from Teramo to Torricella Sicura.
