Bettini triumphs in Settimana

Mapei's Paolo Bettini held on to win the overall of the Settimana Ciclista International after he kept with the leaders in today's final stage finishing in Florence.

The fifth and last stage started in Gaggio Montano, finishing in Florence for a total distance of 161 kilometers. It was won in the end by Fabiano Fontanelli, who beat compatriot Mariano Piccoli The fifth and last stage of the race, between Gaggio Montano and Florence at the distance from 161 kilometers saw the success of the Italian Fabiano Fontanelli (Mercatone Uno), who beat with the sprint his compatriot Mariano Piccoli (Lampre) in a two-up sprint. The two had escaped from a larger break in the final kilometres to win the stage. The eight man group, containing in addition Ortenzi, Ferrari, Frattini, Baliani, Bossoni, Pinotti attacked with 25 kilometres to go, but none were of sufficient threat to Bettini's overall lead.

Bettini, who was also active in last weekend's Milan Sano Remo, was the leader of this race from day 2, winning two of the five stages.
