Solano Beach Classic

Solano Beach, USA, March 23-25, 2000

By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent

The first annual Solano Beach Classic, featuring a total prize list of $40,000, kicked off on March 23rd with the Solano Garbage Time Trial, a 12.2 mile race against the clock sponsored by the Solano Garbage Company. Held on a local air force base, it proved an opportunity for Shaklee's Eric Wohlberg to improve upon his third place finish in the Sea Otter Classic's time trial. Despite the heavy winds and a near-collision with a race minivan while going through a turn, the Canadian finished with a time of 24:16. Jelly Belly's Steve Hegg was second at 0:20, while Adham Sbeih (Navigators) finished third at 22 seconds.

The men's race continued on Friday with the 86-mile Jelly Belly Road Race, which started and finished in front of the Jelly Belly factory. Held under similar conditions to the previous day's time trial: flat and blustery, Wohlberg's Shaklee teammates had little trouble keeping things together, and were content to let it come down to a group finish. That's just what happened, as Navigators sprinter outsped a group of 31 to take the stage, ahead of Mercury's John Peters and Antonio Cruz of Saturn. Wohlberg retained his 20-second lead overall.

Carnegie-Caulfield Criterium

Mulgrave, Australia, March 26, 2000

151 riders turned up at the Sunday morning crit to participate in the second last Sunday of the season. Fine, sunny conditions with a cooling southeasterly breeze. The flat, fast 1000m course on Glenvale Crescent as popular as ever.

A grade’s 41 starters rode hard in pursuit of a break that established a maximum lead of 25 seconds. The dozen or so escapees were reeled in during the last lap as James Taylor put in one of his best last lap efforts of the year. Robert Tighello (Ashburton Cycles) took full advantage of Taylor’s work to win convincingly ahead of Murray Fenwick (Bike Land), Hilton Clarke (Look) and breakaway survivor Ben Day (Merida).

1964 Olympian Mick Hollingworth blitzed the field in a rip ’em up sprint coming after a long breakaway of 15 took a lap at two to go. The hard riding break lapped at a consistently high pace, while those behind demonstrated that not working is conducive to, well, nothing. Second place to Hayden Meads ahead of Stewart Campbell and Nick Hanes.

Two wins in a row for Hugh Watson in C grade where the 46 starters rode hard with the field strung out chasing little breaks that came to naught. Another serial placegetter Stuart Campbell second, Josh Vanderveen and Jon Hollingworth jnr rounded out the placings.

Shane Perkins (14) took the race by the scruff after bridging to a late break of four. Bringing second placed Simon Clarke with him Perkins showed signs of the form that saw him win three National U15 titles in Sydney last week. Hanging on for third, Mark Chadwick ahead of a tiring David Bolton.
