Didac Cuadros (Spa) Artevi Solano Classic - Day 2USA, March 24, 2000 Jelly Belly Road Race Five mile-long circuits around the Jelly Belly factory kicked off battle for the race-savvy teams to see who wanted to take home the most boxes of Jelly Bellys for lunch. Team P&G showed they wanted to play with early attacks. Cheryl Binney (P&G) and Caren Spore (Schwab) got 30ish seconds in the first major breakaway. 800.com replied with a team chase and the AutoTrader.com team followed with attacks after they were spent. This brought back the duo and since we were having so much fun we kept the attacks firing. It was a little earlier than we had planned but sensing the tiring riders we saw no reason to let up. After a billion attacks I slipped away solo with a 35 secound gap. This mid-race quality time alone lasted for about 15 miles. Now it was time for our plan...attack and counterattack since our star sprinter Tina Mayola jetted home last week and we wanted a stage win. Julie Young, Andrea Ratcovich (AutoTrader.com) and Marjon Marik set the stage for Laura Shuford (AutoTrader.com) to attack in the final 10K and to power home for the victory line. She arrived 12 seconds ahead of the charging pack with Nicole Reinhart of Saturn leading the way. GC stayed about the same except for the unfortunate accident involving Sandra Kolob (Schwab) who lost time. Report courtesy of Pam Schuster, racereport@vcnet.com Results - 102 km 1.
