British weekend roundup

Circuit of the Mendips

Bristol, Avon UK, March 19, 2000

Riders came form all over for this year's VC Bristol's Circuit of the Mendips. In fact, the race was more popular this year than last and the organiser had to return many entries. The organiser went on to say the race was very fast for the full field of 60 riders. A break of 11 riders went away on the first lap and dangled in front of the main group for two laps until the 3rd lap. They then increased their lead which continued to yo yo, but they managed to hold off the chasers. About 300 metres from the finish, on a sharp right hand bend, Chris Birch attacked and held the rest of by 2 seconds with David Heaven winning the sprint for 2nd from Peter Wheddon.

Haverhill Wheelers Early Bird RR

Thurlow, Suffolk, March 19, 2000

On what turned out to be a glorious day in Suffolk the Haverhill Wheelers "Early Bird" Road Race was run off in dry, sunny, near windless conditions. A field of 57 riders lined up for the start outside Thurlow village hall for the neutralised ride to the start proper. This was at the top of a gruelling finishing hill to be ridden up a further 10 times for full race distance.

The first of the ten 5 mile circuits was ridden at a brisk opening pace with the time of 12:20 being recorded. Although fast, this only saw 3 riders losing contact through either mechanical failure or lack of fitness. There was a "King of the Hill" sprint at the end of each lap which was to set the way for the main part of the race.

Two riders forged ahead at the end of lap 3 after contesting the sprint and they soon developed a 30 second lead. The two were Craig Sellen (Dataphonic R.T.) and Geoff Weir (Army C.U.). Working well together over the next few laps their lead increased to 58 seconds with the main bunch still pretty much intact and not showing too much concern at this stage of the day. This was all to change on lap 7 when Ben Baldelli (Private Member) attacked off the front of the peloton and within one lap had crossed over to Craig who had dropped Geoff over the top of "Pelican Hill", also on lap 7.

This new leading duo worked well together for the remainder of the race and at the bell had a lead of 45 seconds over the bunch. The latter were still all together although now only 30 strong but in the mood to chase. The lead was cut to only 30 seconds over the next two laps and with 3 miles to go, as Craig had done to Geoff on lap 7 over "Pelican", Ben was to do to Craig leaving him for dead on the run in to the finish. Craig, who had been in the thick of the action for the previous 48 miles, was now rapidly fading and the bunch had him in their sights.

Onto the finish hill for the last time and Ben was cruising to a comfortable victory of 45 seconds at the line covering the undulating 80 kms in a time of 2-11-00. Now all eyes were on the top of the hill to see if Craig had held on. The answer was no, as he was caught at the bottom of the hill with only 400 metres to go. As the bunch swung round the corner at the brow of the hill legs were buckling as the effort of this final time up the hill took its toll. Although Craig had been caught, the rest of his Dataphonics team mates surged to the front to take the next 3 places in a closely fought sprint which had the top 15 spread out over a 5 second gap.

With generous sponsorship from Genzyme Pharmaceuticals for the main prize list and from Chapman & Son for the "King of the Hill" sprints the prize fund was for £270-00 which was appreciated by the riders.

Race organiser Nigel Grainge had nothing but praise for the way the riders rode on this demanding circuit and would like to express his gratitude to the Haverhill Police Specials who supplied excellent race support with a team of 4 officers to control traffic on the 3 junctions on the circuit and at the top of "Pelican Hill" where traffic was stopped as the race approached. The traffic on the roads was not too bad and most motorists acknowledged the race and pulled over to the side and stopped as it went on its way.

Wansbeck Pursuit (Handicap Race)

Longhirst/Northumberland, March 19, 2000

There were 50 starters who were broken up into four groups and according to the organiser there were 10 novices in the front group of 20 riders. The second group, which started 2 minutes behind, consisted of 18 third and fourth category riders. The third group, off 2.30 behind the second group, was made up of eight second and third category riders with there being four first category riders making up the scratch group. This including a Linda McCartney rider Martin Lonie from Glasgow.

The winner came from a 3 up breakaway which formed with a lap to go after all the field had come together with Lonie winning the sprint from his two breakway companions.

WCRA Day of Racing

Milton Keynes Bowl, March 18, 2000

Jon Miles reports that there were big fields, good weather and fast races on the WCRA's Ladies Handicap and support races day. In the men's event, 13 riders got away and it was a sprint finish which decided who got the prizes. In the women's race, National Champion Sally Boyden failed by only half a lap to get back her 4 lap handicap in a race won by 3rd category Sara Dean.
