Return of Campania

The Italian semi-classic, the Giro di Campania has returned to the scene after a seven year absence and it was contested under cold but rideable conditions. Rideable = no snow, which has forced the race to be cancelled several times in the past.

The first 20 kilometers of the 194 kilometer race were fast, but then things settled down until 90 km to go when a group of 6 escaped after the climb at Calvanico and were never headed. The group contained Dario Frigo and Volodymyr Gustov (Fassa Bortolo), as well as a couple of Panaria-Gaerne riders (Antonio Varriale and Domenico Romano), Rodolfo Massi (Cantina Tollo) and Oscar Cavagnis (Alexia Alluminio). The six built up a 6 and a half minute lead by the end, with the victory going to Frigo from Cavagnis and Massi.

Frigo, who has his goal the Giro d'Italia this year, was repaying his team's confidence and is hoping for bigger things this year. "I have established a tight program with the team. I will ride in the Cecchi Gori (Settimana Internazionale) this week, then I'll go to Belgium to dispute the Classics before getting ready for the Giro," he said. He is very keyed up for a big ride in the Giro and would love to play an important role, even if his team does not give him total freedom.
