Postgirot Open - Tour of Sweden - 2.3Sweden, June 14 - 18, 2000Main Page Results Previous stageStage 5 - June 18: Eskilstuna - Stockholm, 143 kmAndersson in his biggest triumphBy Gabriella Ekström, cyclingews.com correspondent I didn't see much of the race, but more than I would have done from the press bus. I went with Ceramica Panaria Gaerne, and Roberto Reverberi who is a very nice and very bold man. We spent the final 142 kilometers of Tour of Sweden, teaching him how to swear in Swedish. He was so pleased with his new skills that he immideately drew level with the peloton to try the words on Niclas Axelsson, who just laughed. Another joke that was commonly used is to take the race radio and scream "Mapei, Mapei!! Crash!!" and see how the fifteenth car in the caravan totally stress out. Personally I expected some attacks during the stage as the yellow jersey was leading with less than a minute, but it never really happened. Credit Agricole's Magnus Bäckstedt tried to go away early in the stage, but not even the big Swede could stay away on the windy roads of Sweden. Rabobank who had the second placed Dekker among them only tried once too, with Coen Boerman, but just as Bäckstedt he was brought back by the Swedish National team, who grew with their task. It is understandable though that the big teams are grateful for a couple of days of relaxation, while the riders in the national team, on home ground might be riding the race of their lives, and therefore they are trying harder. In Europe the big teams are always watched, and they are always expected to chase back whenever there's a break, so a couple of them rode a peaceful race, watching the Swedish nature and the blonde girls, hoping that the stage would come together to a bunch sprint. The only intermediate sprint of the day was located in Södertälje, 50 kilometers south of Stockholm. Roberto Lochowski from Agro Adler made an effort over the uphill sprint and won it ahead of Marcus Ljungquist from Team Fakta. That increased Lochowski's lead in the total sprint classification even more, and only an accident could stop him now. The peloton entered Stockholm a couple of minutes after two. The police made a great job to protect the riders safety and to close the traffic off, something that isn't easily done in Stockholm. The weather was better than it had been during the rest of the week, and for a change, there was no umbrellas waiting for the riders in Kungsträdgården. The finishing time was taken as the riders passed the finishing line for the first time, in order to avoid any major overall changes because of a nasty crash on the tricky circuit. Especially one section with a lot of roadwork and dusty pavé on top, was a scare. No falls were reported during the lap, and Andersson who had already won the general classification, felt so good that he wanted to show off in front of the spectators, maybe even winning the stage. It is never wrong to stay close to the front. A sharp corner 200 metres from the finish, made it a bit hard for the teams to keep their guys together. Daniele Galli from Amica Chips intended to lead Kurt Asle Arvesen through the last corner, but came out of it with such a big gap that he decided to go for it. Jaan Kirsipuu, McEwen and Hondo were all up front, trying to snatch the victory, but the fact that Galli gave everything with no intention of saving his energy when going through the corner, helped him get a gap that was worth a try. After that, he just rode on pure inspiration. Danilo Hondo finished fourth, just like in Eskilstuna when he accidently thought he won. This time his sprint helped him getting the red jersey back from Dekker at the very last second. The jersey winners were awarded flowers, mobile phones, horns to blow in and of course a kiss or two from a blonde girl with flowers in her hair. (No, it wasn't me!) None of the riders were brave enough to sing a song like De Jongh and Blijlevens did on the podium in Stockholm two years ago, but those of us who went to the banquet afterwards actually saw race winner Andersson dance on a stage together with his favourite band.
Andersson defies the oddsBy Tomas Nilsson, cyclingnews.com correspondent Michael Andersson shouldn't be racing. Last year he was second in the World Championships ITT after six weeks without a race since his team had closed down. Now he wins the Tour of Sweden after a spring where there were two months without racing since his team, de Nardi in third division, had difficulties getting invitations. For the Tour of Sweden a national team was composed, mostly by experienced amateurs and some domestiques from the continent. Nevertheless he received full support on the final stages and was able to win the Tour of Sweden, his third win in this race. The last stage didn't have any major drama. Magnus Bäckstedt (Credid Agricole) tried an early attack, Coen Boerman (Rabobank) bridged up but the two were caught well before the finish in Stockholm. The Swedish national team was helped mostly by Team Postgirot (the national U23 squad), Ag2R working for Kirsipuu and Collstrop. The finish in central Stockholm was however won by Daniele Galli (Amica Chips).
