Postgirot Open - Tour of Sweden - 2.3Sweden, June 14 - 18, 2000Main Page ResultsStage 1b - June 14: Vårgårda - Skövde, 132.6 kmTelekom strikes in second legBy Gabriella Ekström, cyclingnews.com correspondent The road stage later in the day started out very easy, but the tailwind allowed the riders to cover the first 44 kilometers in an hour. The wind also caused a lot of crashes, and pieces of pink Jean Delatour clothing were soon scattered over the road. The first real attack came when Thomas Grönquist, normally riding for Amore&Vita, but in this race with the Swedish National Team, attacked just before the Hotspot sprint in Falköping. Grönquist has been living in Falköping for a couple of years, and has also been riding for a local club, so he was delighted when he won the sprint just in front of Collstrop's Tony Bracke who had been chasing behind for a while. Grönquist made no secret of the fact that he was looking for a new team to ride in next year, and promised that we hadn't seen the last of him in this race. When Grönquist and Bracke were caught, it was time for Lennie Kristenssen from Team Fakta to go away, but the peloton never allowed him to get more than a one minute gap. A new crash occurred with 90 kilometers to go, again it was a Jean Delatour rider, this time Francisque Teyssier who crashed out together with Team Mälarenergi's Jukka Heinikainen who cracked his helmet into several pieces, but escaped with bruises and a light concussion. A new attack came from Collstrop's Geert Omloop, who was later joined by Agro Adler's Roberto Lochowski. The peloton didn't let them go to far this time either. The stage ended in Skövde with three laps on a circuit over the (in)famous climb of Billingen. The peloton stayed together over the first lap, with Swedish riders Michael Andersson and Niclas Axelsson in the lead. During the second lap a front group was formed with Michael Blaudzun from Memorycard, Kurt-Asle Arvesen from Amica Chips, Thor Hushovd from CA and Laurent Brochard from Jean Delatour together with the Swedish duo of Axelsson and Andersson. At the same time a gruppetto was formed with our Italian friends from Panaria-Gaerne at the front. If Marcel Wüst has been the master of the grupetto in the nineties, Luca Cei will definitely be the boss in the 2000's. When the riders crossed the top of Billingen for the last time, more and more riders started to join up with the front group, some on the ascent, but most of them benefitted from daring descending. When the frontgroup reached the paved sprint it had grown to 45 riders. Memorycard's Michael Blaudzun hit the front first, but as soon as Telekom's Danilo Hondo showed himself in the middle of the road, it was clear that he would be outstanding. He won the stage in front of CA's Thor Hushovd who also took his 14th consecutive U23 leader's jersey in this race. Third over the line was Farm Frites' Andreas Klier. The Telekom rider Hondo showed that he has a lot of class, and hopefully this is only one of all his future victories to come. The yellow jersey went to Erik Dekker from Rabobank, and he has to defend it over another famous climb, Klevaliden, in the stage tomorrow. Tomas Nilsson's reportThe stage started with a strong wind from behind (as always in Vårgårda) and the speed was over 50 kph with Rabobank and Farm Frites at the front. After 40 kms there is a crash involving half the peloton but the fallen riders soon got back again. Swedish national Thomas Grönqvist, otherwise at Amore&Vita, and Tony Bracke (Collstrop) made a gap, which grew to 50 seconds, and the Swede won the sprint at Falköping. Magnus Ljungblad (Sweden) and Enrico Degano (Panaria) took the remaining points. When the riders arrived at Skövde for the finishing laps the peloton was complete again. But before the first climb to Billingehus Michael Andersson (Sweden) attacked, and he was soon joined by a fine group: Michael Blaudzun (Memorycard), Kurt-Asle Arvesen (Amica), Niklas Axelsson (Panaria), Thor Hushovd (CA) and Laurent Brochard (Jean Delatour). On the second climb Andersson once again gapped the group but when the riders crossed the line for the last lap the peloton was together. In the subsequent sprint Danilo Hondo (Telekom) was the fastest followed by Arvesen.
