Another family affair

Early on in the Swedish championships eleven riders went off at the front and had for a while a three minutes gap to a second group where among others defending champion Henrik Sparr sat. All other major favourites were in the main bunch some five minutes behind.

On the fourth of the six 36 km laps the pros increased the speed and the whole gap was eaten up in one lap. All the big guns, like Michael Andersson (De Nardi), Michel Lafis (Farm Frites), Magnus Bäckstedt (Credit Agricole), Marcus Ljungqvist (Team Fakta) and home favourite Nicklas Axelsson (Ceramica Panaria - Gaerne) were now at the front. The only one missing was Martin Rittsel (Memorycard - Jack & Jones) who abandoned on the second lap with a soar throat not wanting to risk the Tour start and Glenn Magnusson who simply missed the train.

On the last lap only five riders were able to stay together on the final climb of Gesundaberget slalom ski centre where a road across the mountain had been asphalted especially for the race. But two riders passed only ten seconds behind: Crédit Agricole's "Green Giant" Magnus Bäckstedt and the young team Crescent rider Stefan Adamsson. The caught the front group on the way down and despite several attacks from Nicklas Axelsson and Michael Andersson the seven came towards the sprint together. And in the sprint the youngest rider, Stefan Adamsson, won. Forty years after his grandfather Owe took his second of four Swedish road titles.
