Day 2 - June 25: Elite Men/Women/U23/Junior Road Races

Stangelj too strong, but later DQ'd

The Slovenian elite men's championships were held concurrently with the U23's in Izidi over a 164 kilometre parcourse. Favourites for the men's race were riders such as Gorazd Stangelj, Andrej Hauptman, Igor Kranjec and Walter Bonca, winner of the time trial. Ultimately, it was Stangelj who took the honours, after breaking away with Hauptman in the second half of the race. The two established a two minute gap quite quickly, which expanded to nearly four minutes at the finish.

Stangelj attacked Hauptman with 11 kilometres to go, opening up a decisive gap. Hauptman could only hold it to 16 seconds, and finished second. In third was the time trial champion, Bonca, who rode in alone, as did the rest of the 9 finishers.

Unfortunately for Stangelj, he tested positive for the stimulant ephedrine in a subsequent urine analysis, meaning that Andrej Hauptmann was awarded the title.
