The race started on a cool and bright morning in suburban Philadelphia on the roads of Blue Bell, PA. The 5-mile "Belgian kermesse " type loop had two very distinctive sections. The first three miles were contested on gently rolling roads and the final two miles in a technical section that included 15 turns. The opening miles were uneventful with teams trying to position themselves for the eventual early attacks through the tight neighborhood section. On lap two a group of five developed that included John Peters and Will Frischkorn of Mercury, Chadd Gerlach of USA Pro Cycling, Jerzy Wozniac of Ideal Tile and Brian Whitcomb of L'Equipe Cheval. The undulating roads and tight turns were to the small groups benefit as they were able to gain 30 seconds by mile 15. Local teams Bicycle Therapy and Scott BiKyle Flyers attempted to send riders across to the lead group but the fast speeds of the peleton and the windy conditions foiled these attempts. At mile 35 there were a series of attacks, animated by Roberto Gaggioli of USA Pro Cycling and Kam Po Wong of New Power. As a result, a second group developed that included Roy Knickman of Mercury, Kyle Wamsley of Scott-BiKyle Flyers, Troy Clark of Bear Tooth and Kam Po Wong of New Power. By mile 40 the lead group had extended it's lead to 1:33 on the chase group of three, as Wamsley rejoined the peleton, and 2:30 on the main peleton. The chase group worked hard to gain time on the lead group, but with the race reaching the final miles the lead group had too much power. At this point the peleton was spending most of the loop strung out, especially on the home stretch section where wicked cross winds forced riders to fight for the gutter line. Phil Cable of Enzymatic Therapy confirmed this by stating, "This was a fast race. The fastest since I placed at CoreStates. This was a pro race". With 5 miles to go there was still a lot of power back in the field and teams were setting up their fastest man to take the field sprint and a piece of the $5000 purse, which paid down to 25th. Peters showed he had the best legs in the race, powering the break and then attacking with 500 meters to go to take the win over a charging Gerlach and Frischkorn. Gerlach, giving it one hundred percent to catch Peters in the final few hundred meters, just had a few words to say, "That man is just way too fast," referring to Peters lightning sprint. "I knew if I got though the final corner first the race was mine," said Peters in his post-race interview. Nathan Dahlberg proved to be the strongest for the second weekend in a row as he took out the Vandenberg Grand Prix at Vandenberg Air Force Base California Saturday, June 3. The race started out fast and hard with many attacks throughout. Everything was brought back by the largest team present, Net Zero, headed by former Chevrolet/LA Sheriff rider Jamie Palonetti. With just 8 laps remaining of the 1 mile circuit, 7 riders established themselves off the front. Three representing Net Zero. One rider who missed the break was Dahlberg. Once realizing this, he launched off the front of the pack with 4 others in tow. The Dahlberg group finally bridged with 3 laps remaining. The break, now 11 strong, settled in for the sprint. Dahlberg had other ideas as he sped away with 400 meters to go and out lasted a frustrated Palonetti to the line. Another great finish from a great rider! Results Pro 1,2 - 30 miles 1.
