Carnegie-Caulfield Criterium
Carnegie-Caulfield
Criterium
Mulgrave, Victoria, June
3, 2000
A field of 98 in total for a criterium held on the popular summer
circuit in Mulgrave. The U17 and U19 riders mostly attended The Bosch
Junior Tour of the Peninsula leaving the club racing to the seniors
and the very young. Sunshine and a cold Northerly breeze in typical
Melbourne autumn fashion, chill by any standard when stripped for racing.
A grade’s small group set about attacking each other seemingly to
keep warm in the chilly conditions. The finale saw the Aces sprinting
among the B grade stragglers with Hilton Clarke jnr (Look) the first
across the line with an impressive turn of speed. Morgan Barnes second
ahead of Ashburton’s Robert Tighello and Cameron Carlisle.
41 riders in B grade split around half distance with seven gaining
a lead of up to 40 seconds. The final margin was half that, but very
convincing. Ian Smith took the money in a hard fought sprint with Andrew
Van Slobbe nipping in second ahead of Paralympic duo Paul Lake (HIH
Insurance) and Peter Homann.
The big C grade field rode en-block throughout with any attacks rapidly
dealt with. A wall to wall field sprint ensued with Mark Howard victorious
from Josh Vanderveen and Brad Walker. Fourth place went to another Paralympic
duo in Russell Wolfe and Christine Fisher on the tandem! Vision impaired
Christine recovering well from her broken collarbone is back on track
for Sydney 2000.
D grade’s little group was dominated by the veterans, with top sprinter
David Hill seen as a likely winner. Youngster Simon Clarke spent most
of the race in Hill’s draft, at 350m to go the boy blew past Hill as
he was suckered to the front too early, the boy able to sit down 50m
from the line and savor his second ever win. Hill kicked again to take
second ahead of Mick Paul and John Groves.
