Prix Des Fondateurs a Neuville Les DamesFrance, May 27, 2000 Some shocked faces on the local regional women when the A.I.S. Australian team cars arrived, so we assumed these girls weren't looking forward to the A.I.S. Australian team's presence in the race. 40 starters, with the race route comprising of 10 laps around a 4.6km circuit, with a 20km finishing circuit. Plenty of primes on offer each lap, and with all regional racing, rewards for the first in each category only. With a 'dual-stage' French Cup round on Sunday, the Aussie girls were conserving a little, and kept the group together until the last 20km circuit, where the attacks strung the bunch to pieces. Initially, Liz Tadich, Alison Wright and Hayley Rutherford got away, with Sara Carrigan and Juanita Feldhahn crossing the ever-increasing time gap with solo efforts. The group of 5 held about a 30 to 40 sec. advantage over the main group, until 5km to go, when the 5 leading Aussies began counter-attacking each other. Sara Carrigan and Hayley Rutherford gained a 200 metre gap with 1km remaining, and a slight uphill finish for the last 400 metres into Neuville les Dames. The other 3 weren't content on letting them get too far away, and with continual counter-attacks at each other, the final gap was only 20 - 30 metres. Sara Carrigan took out the race, with Hayley Rutherford, in her first European race, and only 4 days in Europe, just hanging on for 2nd in front of Liz Tadich. Alison Wright just got past Juanita Feldhahn on the line, and a clean sweep for the Aussies, for a good warm-up going into the more important French Cup round on Sunday. Kristy Scrymgeour and Kym Shirley were the other Aussie competitors, and finished in the main group of 20 remaining riders. Report by James Victor, Australian National coach Results - 66 km 1.
