First of the National Series races on Silver Jubilee day Eastway was the over 40's Peter Fryer Veteran race with almost 90 riders taking to the line. This was perhaps the most apt of all the races because many of the riders have ridden here since Eastway started, one, Dave Wright, was presented with a trophy at the start for his 25 year support. The field included World Masters champion Ian Hallam, former top professional and now top vet Neil Martin and Nick Yarworth who has sprung up and won two races this year with his demon sprint. Other former top pros were Reg Smith and Phil Corely. Another vet, Mick Gray, had just finished the Milk RAS in Ireland (92nd) and so had plenty of racing miles, perhaps too many going on what he said before and after the race. The race itself was fast, averaging more than 25mph in the wind around the undulating circuit which had one hairpin corner. Fast yes, but also easy sitting in the wheels which is probably why the race was dominated by an early break driven along by Bob Varney (MK & TC) among others. Sitting in the group, lining the field from time to time were all the main favourites including Ian Hallam and with around 14 laps to go, the pressure was applied, the bunch split (who let that wheel go!!) and away went all the favourites who chased down the front group and on the line, Yarworth, who with a lap to go was at the back of the large leading group, took the win and 40 points from Hallam and Eastway veteran, Dave Wright. As this was my first Peter Fryer event, I have to say it was an interesting race to be riding alongside all these "names" and although intimidated by it all early on, afterwards realising these guys are not as super human as I first thought when on a circuit like this. At the end only 1 minute or so separated the two main groups and I recommend the Fryer series to any vet who wants a good race. As for the circuit, 50 times up the climb is enough to test anyone and towards the end, you could see there were a lot of tired legs getting up that hill but overall, with the circuit being alongside the extended "M11", getting to and from it has improved immensly. Although I got lost getting there, getting home was a piece of cake and it took me half the time which makes me more receptive to coming here in the future. Congrats to "Knocker" for the day of racing and all those that helped out and so on. The race was on from the word go but such were the conditions, it was very difficult to get away and despite may of the riders making brave attempts to form a leading group, it wasn't until towards the end that a group of five did get away and managed to slowly inccrease their lead on the nuch behind. Despite a fall towards the end, Chris Skinner managed to get up and rejoin but on the line, it was Mark Bailey who triumphed and I'm not sure who was more happy, Mark or his mum! The race was dominted by three groups, the leading break of 3 which was lead by Gary Baker and included Tony Gibb and Ben Powell. Then a chase group with Brian Fleming and Richard Edwards and then the bunch which towards the end was lapped by both the leaders and chasers. With around 3 laps to go, Baker and Gibb moved clear of Powell and on the finish line it was Gibb who showed he's still the king of the crits with a several length advantage over Gary Baker who was storming up the climbing during the early stages of the race. They were also the most "professional" looking of the teams with riders and helpers alike in team kit.
