He beat Ivan Quaranta and Dario Pieri in a sprint, after an attack containing Francesco Casagrande, Massimo Podenzana (Mercatone Uno), and Fabrizio Guidi (FdJ) was caught on the last lap. Unfortunately for Mario, he was badly injured in a training crash the next day. Results1. Mario Cipollini (Ita) Saeco-Valli & Valli 2. Ivan Quaranta (Ita) Mobilvetta Design-Rossin 3.
