Day 1 - June 20: Individual time trials

Marco Velo (Mercatone Uno) retained his tricolore jersey that he won last year, after he rode the fastest time in the Open category of the time trial in Pordenone. Velo beat Daniele Contrini (Liquigas) and Diego Ferrari (Amica Chips) over the 39.6 kilometre course, averaging 49.94 km/h in the process. However, Velo later failed a drugs test (salbutamol) but successfully appealed and held onto his title.

In the women's flatter 29.5 km event, it was Gabriella Pregnolato (Gas Sport) who repeated her 1996, 1997, and 1999 wins, clocking just under 39 minutes for the distance to beat Luisa Tamanini (Alfa Lum) and Lucia Pizzolotto (Michela Fanini).

The under 23 competition was fiercely contested, with Cristian Caldarelli going nearly four minutes faster than Pregnolato over the same course (Average 50.2 km/h).

The junior men's category (20.2 km) was taken out by Daniele Colli in 26 minutes, while in the junior women, Gloria Guarnieri rode 18.24 for the 12 kilometres.
