Giro d'Italia Femminile - 2.9.1Italy, June 25-July 9, 2000Main Page Results Marion Clignet's report Previous stage Stage 6a - July 2: Formigine-Sasuolo, 72 kmSommarriba takes commandThe atmosphere on the startline was one of festivity as Maranello, the home of Ferrari concurrently hosted the 'Trofeo Enzo Ferrari' crono car race. The town was filled with colour and virtually every exotic car was represented including Ferrari, Pantera, Porshe, rare Fiats and Alfa's as well as the famed Renault Alpine. The race completed three laps of Maranello before heading out on the road to Sassulo. The race remained generally intact until the the road turned skywards 10km from home. The climb was a vicious 2km ascent. The climb was packed with spectators and the riders were visible the whole way up, due to the sparse vegetation. The Alfa Lum girls got cracking, in particular Pucinskaite and shattered the field. The group of six crested well clear of the field and commenced the technical, switchback descent into the finish. The pink jersey of Boubenkova went on to take the stage from Cappellotto and Somarriba. The Trio of Shirley, Carrigan and Hemsley all arrived in the second group @ 1.28. Marion Clignet's reportA Witch's Tit! 72km fairly flat with a few rollers to end on a pointy witche's tit! She was mean and pointy...with no nipple. A brave early atack was made by the sole Polish rider (I think)...our tactic was to try something new. At km 40 we all attacked at the same time. The idea was to get a TTT going with our best placed GC rider (Tatiana) on the end and wiplash her off the front on the climb. We strung everyone out pretty well but not enough to really make a difference....so that was that. As we approached the climb-about 2km with switchbacks and all I managed to flat at the base....and then to top off my morning whilst riding back to the group behind the car the driver hit the brakes and thankfully my presently large arse kept me anchored and I managed not to fly over the roof. Made it back to the tail end as the front was taking off so that settled that for me. Bubnenkova on excellent form won keeping herself in pink.
