Wright tries close the gap as VM wins anotherThe forecast was for a cool day with thunderstorms, alas, it turned out to be sunny and 30 degrees. The Australians were primed to help launch Alison Wright closer to the blue jersey on the two sprints today and the soigneurs were again out on the course, checking the odometer against the race guide and providing information about the terrain and corners, leading into the sprint. The race book had the sprint marked at 36km, however it was measured at 47km in the car! The information was radioed back to the team, however, the Giro organisation realised their faux pas and quickly tried to move the sprint back. They didn't make it back more than 2km, before the race was approaching, so a motorcycle marshall stood by the side of the road waving a flag to mark the sprint. The sprint plan had been foiled, but Australian rider Liz Tadich was on the front at the time and realising what was happening, jumped clear to take the points. No other riders contesting the sprint jersey scored points. At 65km covered, an eight rider break went clear, including the ever agressive Italian National Champion, Pregnolato. The group went away to a lead of about half a minute, before being halted at a railway crossing. The break wasn't substantial enough for them to be granted an equivalent buffer after the train had passed and the bunch restarted as one. In the second sprint, the Farm Frites again got their sprinter Mansveld up to the front. Alison Wright kicked first and had a good lead, but she was ultimately overhauled by Mansveld and ran second. On the final run into the finish, riders had to negotiate a left/right/left going up and over a railway overpass. Unfortunately Alison Wright slipped on the second left hander and crashed along with three others. Wright had been holding 7th wheel in behind the Farm Frites train. Mansveld was driving the train for over a kilometre for her team leader Van Moorsel, who then took over the reigns with a massive 600m to go! Van Moorsel led the whole way up the straight, before shifting up a gear with 200m to go to steamroll the field to make it three wins and a second in four stages. Tomorrow is a rest day. The next racing will be on Saturday 1 July, from Montefiorino to Fiorano Modonese, which is in the mountainous region to the south of Modena, just to the north of the province of Tuscany. The stage features three climbs (two QOM's) and two sprints. Dutch rider Debby Mansveld has struggled on the climbs thus far and this stage will be a test of whether she can hold the blue sprinters jersey. Report by Mark Carter, who is with the Australian team Kristy Scrymgeour's reportWell, we are up to Day 6 of the giro d'Italia and before the tour has even started to get too heavy we have a rest day. It's a good thing for me as I have been feeling very ordinary and needed some relatively tame days to try to find my legs. The last two days have been flat and the main concern for us was to help Ali out in the sprints. Every day she is getting more practice and is certainly showing that she can sprint with the best of them. She is now 2nd in the sprint classification behind Debby Mansveld. One good thing (or some would say not so good), is that in Italy you can always rely on the unexpected to happen. Yesterday's stage was no different. It was actually a comedy of errors and surprises. We started the race expecting a sprint at 37km and 76km. Things somehow changed as we went along, and the first sprint ended up being somewhere in between 37km and 47km. Liz Tadich accidently won the sprint in an attempt to start the paceline to lead Ali out. Then, a bit further down the road we had to stop the race for a few minutes and wait for a train to go past, the break of 8 riders who had 20 secs on the bunch couldn't have been too impressed. The rest of us just laughed it off and took the chance to get some more water from the team cars. The last 30km of the race were extremely fast, with many attacks and attempted break aways, but it all stayed together for a bunch kick at the end. Of course with Ali being our best chance for a bunch kick we tried to help her out. She had good positioning coming into the last 1.5km, but in all the jostling at the front she came down on the final corner. (She is not hurt, except for her ego)! Leontien won the race again, with the help of her team mate Debby Mansveld. Tomorrow we start again for the final 11 stages of the tour. Many big mountains ahead, but also 2 flat Time Trials!
