2000 Peace winner, Piotr Wadecki flew in to Philly after finishing runner-up in the Tour of Japan on Sunday. Despite two international flights, lots of airline food from LOT, the Polish national carrier and a wicked case of jet lag, Wadecki showed today before a small crowd in Wilmington, Deleware why he is one of the world's up and coming riders.

Wadecki and his break companions Vogels and USPRO Champ Jemison powered away from the field after 9 of the 20 3.7 mile laps and rode hard at once. The trio got a cushion of 2' on the disinterested peloton and after a few laps of a hard effort, Wadecki blew off the effects of his travel and began to visibly dominate the break. Although the peloton did wake up in the final few laps and cut the trio's margin down by half, Wadecki and Vogels dumped Jemison on the final lap and it came down to a two-up match sprint in the last 200 meters. Vogels pulled his foot out and couldn't contest the final rush, where Wadecki took the win with upraised arms.

Wilmington, DE is a city of 75,000 located about 20 miles southwest of Philadelphia. While this is just the third year that Wilmington has been a part of the First Union series, it is hardly new to world-class bicycle racing: for seven years, it hosted the first stage of the late, lamented Tour DuPont. Not surprisingly, DuPont Chemicals is headquartered in Wilmington, and is Delaware's single largest private employer.

Race Day Weather Forecast: mostly sunny, with temperatures approaching 80 degrees F and light winds.
